Page 155 of To Make Matters Worse

“She’s a bitch,” Liv said. “Let me see her in public. She can catch these hands.”

Violet laughed, and they chatted for a little while longer before Violet knew she had to get back to work.

When she was at her desk, Violet grew nervous for her interview. It was set for five, right after Jason left, and before she had to get home.

Her day flew by, and by the time five rolled around, her nerves had only grown.

It had been six years since she had interviewed for a position. She was so not ready for it.

Violet was interviewing with a woman named Lindsey Roberts on a Zoom call. She was older, with graying hair and heavy makeup.

“Hello, is this Violet Moore?” Lindsay asked the moment Violet got into the Zoom meeting.

Violet blinked, a little off put about the question. “Yes, I’m Violet. How are you today?”

“That’s inconsequential," Lindsay replied. Violet blinked at the answer. “I’m here to talk about your experience - are you ready?”

“Sure," Violet said, trying to keep a level head. Was this seriously how this woman operated? Were there no pleasantries?

There wasn’t much experience to talk about, since she had only worked at the school for her career, but Violet tried to connect it to the current position the best she could. A lot of resources had said focus on results, and Violet had loads of that.

She talked about how her average test scores were the highest in the district, how she connected with her work on a personal level. She spoke about how much she enjoyed education was proud to make it better for kids.

Lindsey listened with a straight face. Violet wondered if she was doing well or terrible, and which would be worse.

“I think we’ve asked all we can,” Lindsey said, bringing Violet out of her thoughts. “We’ll be in touch.”

“Wait,” Violet asked. “I want to ask how you found me. I didn’t even apply for this position.”

“A mutual contact recommended you.”

“Who?”

“Her name is Lauren Sheffield. She’s my niece, and normally I do not care for family relationships, but she is particularly impressive.”

Violet barely heard the rest of her sentence “L-Lauren. Oh, I think I know a Lauren.”

“Yes. She said she knows you through college and her current boyfriend. If that’s answers your question, we’ll be in touch.”

Violet didn’t even say goodbye. She was too shocked. The meeting ended, and she found herself staring at her desktop.

Lauren was behind this? The same woman who wanted Violet as far away from Charlie as possible? She felt like she was going to be sick.

Lindsey, her possible future boss, knew Lauren.

She also seemed to have Lauren’s pointed attitude, but in a biting, professional way. Violet didn’t know how she would do working with someone like that.

She took a few deep breaths, knowing she was freaking out. Her mother would say this was perfect. She was using her connection to someone to get ahead in life.

But she hated this. Lauren obviously wanted her out of the picture, and Lindsey wasn’t a friendly boss. She would be miserable. Independent, with nothing to it. Besides, this interview made her look back on her career, on all the pain and tears, work, and reward.

And she had loved every second of it.

“Ms. Moore?” A voice asked. “Are you alright?”

She looked up to find Dr. Jones in her classroom.

“Hey,” she said, her voice only slightly shaking. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
