“How did you know about it?”

“Lewis told me a bit, but there’s no reason a paper would have caused you two to hate each other.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure … Lauren borrowed Charlie’s laptop and changed all the comments to be awful… like cyberbullying level awful. And then I went off on him about it, but he thought he had only sent a few comments.”

“Why all the secrecy though? Why not tell me?”

“Because …” Violet sighed. This still hurt to bring up. Even now. “I was thinking about grad school. And the comments said I’d never make it … and I didn’t want to bring it up.”

“Violet!” Liv said, reaching across the table to smack Violet’s arm. “I totally would have supported you!”

“I know! But hearing I was only ever good for being a teacher, plus the fact I thought it was from someone that I trusted made me unable to share it. It hurt.”

“You really thought he said that?’

“Yes. And he thought he sent something else. So, when I asked him about it - he stood by what he said.”

“That conniving bitch.”

“I know, but we talked it out and we’re okay now. Lauren came by to try and talk things out with Charlie, but he was done with her after she lied to him for six years.”

“Um, yeah. He’d better be. Hang on, when did you sleeping with him come into the equation?”

“The party.”

“Micah’s party? After Elijah went nuts on you?”

“Yeah, but we both knew we liked each other at that point.”

“When did that happen?”

“The night before. We agreed not to act on it, but … then we went back on that. We’re in this weird stage where we’re kind of together, but with the job…”

“Wait, all of this is happening and he’s still being supportive about it?”

“He said we’d figure it out.”

“I’ve … gotta reevaluate everything I know now.”

“Is it that hard to believe we communicated?”

“I’m going from never being allowed to mention his name to you being with him. It’s a huge jump.”

“I know. But it wasn’t for us. Once Lauren was gone it was like a light switch, like we were always meant to be friends.”

“You used to be, before everything went downhill, but then it got worse and worse.”

“I know,” Violet said. “I was angry and hurt for what I thought he did, and he had Lauren telling him I was being a terrible person. And I had never told anyone my real reason for hating him, so I never got talked down from my own ledge. So, it exploded the rare times we saw each other. But then we had to see each other because of the apartment issue and then … it’s like it is now.”

“So, what you’re telling me is I should have locked Lauren in a supply closet for a few weeks and it would have all worked out?”

Violet shrugged. “Maybe.”

“So… you guys are almost dating, and you’re still thinking about this job?”

Violet sighed, feeling her mood crash at the thought. “I feel like I have to. It doesn’t feel great to have to live in someone else’s house because I literally can’t afford anything else. At the end of the day, he can afford a home with his salary, and I can’t. That feels wrong.”

Liv sighed. “I get it. I do. I couldn’t imagine how you felt losing your apartment.”
