Jason frowned at her and didn’t seem convinced. He went back to his work, but she could practically feel him shutting down. She wanted to take it all back, and not even go for the job, but she knew she had to. She knew she needed to.

It didn’t feel great. But then again, her mom had always said going for these kinds of things never did.

Would her mom be proud of her for finally doing what she always wanted? Would she finally be happy with Violet?

Violet wasn’t sure it was worth it, but she wanted to try, so she would.

When Jason’s mom arrived to pick him up, he gave her a sullen goodbye. She watched him go, feeling like a terrible person, but knew this was something she had to look into.

Once her classroom was empty, she left for the day. She still felt conflicted, and she hated it. Maybe she shouldn’t be making such a big deal out of an interview, but they had reached out to her. She hadn’t even applied.

Violet took a deep breath when she got home, hoping Charlie wasn’t going to be pissed at her for considering it. The last thing she wanted was to hurt him too.

Charlie

Violet walked in the house, and Charlie felt a little bit of tension ease in his chest. Thank God - he had someone to talk to.

He was so shocked his mind kept going in circles over what had happened, over what he had saw. He was sitting on the couch when she walked in, and he jumped up the moment he saw her. She raised her eyebrows at him.

“Is everything okay?” She asked.

“No. But maybe yes. I don’t know.”

“Something happened," she said, taking her coat off.

“Yeah, while I was getting dinner,” Charlie said, he pointed to the table, where everything was set. He knew he wasn’t feeling hungry, but she had to be starving.

“Okay, let’s sit and talk about it then," Violet said.

It was so weird having someone who was like her. He was used to having his problems minimized by Lauren. Violet didn’t do that. She was always there.

She sat at the table across from him. She glanced at him, as if asking if it was okay to eat while he talked, and he handed her a piece of garlic bread in response. She happily took it and looked at him expectantly.

He told her everything. He told her how his mom had been a little off lately, and why she had missed the wedding. He told her about his childhood and how she never dated. He told her about the woman she was eating with and how happy she looked.

Violet listened intently, eyes focused only on him. When he was done, he said, “I know she needed time to tell me. She was with a woman, so maybe that’s a factor, but what I’m more upset about is how she lied. She wasn’t at Liv and Lewis’s wedding and the more I think about it, the less I think she was on a work trip. I know I didn’t tell her everything about our past, but I didn’t lie.”

Violet swallowed, and said, “I think it’s okay to be upset she lied, but she also is probably terrified to come out to you. This is a big change for both you and her. She’s never dated, right?”

“No.”

“Then she could be working herself up to it.”

“I mean I’m happy for her. And this is a change. I thought she never dated because she was heartbroken over my dad. My views on love came from watching her do it all alone. She even told me love ends.”

Violet seemed lost in thought, and he realized how callous he was being. Technically, after the night before, they weren’t strictly friends.

“I’m not… I mean I’m not saying anything about us. I’m sorry if it-“

“No, you’re fine," Violet replied. “I wasn’t thinking about that. I was more trying to think of how to say something without it sounding bad.”

“It’s okay. Just say it.”

Violet sighed. “Is it possible you misunderstood what your mom said to you?”

“What do you mean?”
