As Violet taught for the rest of the day, she couldn’t get the possible move out of her mind. She’d be away from her mom, but also be away from Liv and Charlie.

But maybe that would be a good thing.

She had been left by her father, and then in a way by her own mother. She had been dealing with that pain since she was a little girl. Maybe it was time for her to run for once before she was the one screwed over.

So, at the end of the day, when Jason was in her classroom doing homework, she looked at apartments. None of them spoke to her like Charlie’s house - not that she expected them to.

Later that day, she got a call from a recruiter to schedule an interview.

Violet panicked, not wanting Jason to know about her job idea. She set the details and tried to pretend nothing happened, but Jason had heard the whole exchange.

“What was that?” He asked.

“Nothing," she said, shaking her head.

“It sounded like a job," he said. “Are you leaving?”

Violet sighed. She didn’t want to have this conversation with him, but she didn’t want to lie to him, either. “I don’t know. It’s only an interview, but maybe.”

“I don’t want you to leave. I like you here.”

“I’m not sure, Jason. But I’ll stay as long as I can, okay?”

“No!” Jason snapped. “I like you here.”

“Nothing is set in stone. It may not happen.”

“But you’ll leave me! Just like everyone else does!”

Violet sighed, willing away her instinctive reaction. Of course this was going to be hard to explain to a kid.

“I won’t leave you,” she told him. “I’ll think about you every day, and once you’re old enough, I’ll be able to see you on social media. It’s not you I’m leaving. And it’s not like I want to, but I have to make choices sometimes, even if they’re hard.”

“Will you come back?”

“Yeah, my friends are here," she said, smiling. Charlie is here.

“But what about your boyfriend?” Jason asked. “Won’t he be sad?”

“Who?”

“That guy from the winter festival.”

“Charlie? He’s not my boyfriend.”

“Whatever, but he’ll be sad too.”

Violet paused. Maybe he would. Or maybe she was overestimating how much he cared about her. She tended to do that. If anything, she could come visit.

“Maybe for a bit, but I don’t think he will. We aren’t that close.”

That was a lie, and she knew it. They were more than close. She trusted him far more than she should. It was dangerous, actually.

More reason to run.

“But… but…”

“Hey, don’t stress about it," she told Jason. “I don’t know yet. But I’ll let you know when I do.”
