Page 129 of To Make Matters Worse

For a moment, Charlie wanted to storm off. He wanted to tell Lewis to fuck off, and he would do whatever he wanted with Violet.

But then he saw it from his friend’s perspective. To them, Charlie and violet were teetering over the edge, ready to jump back into fighting at any moment. They had been the ones to bear the brunt of the arguments over the last six years.

They were nervous.

“That was the plan anyways.”

“I cannot believe that not only are you two friends but you’re somehow in love with her.”

“Yeah, I know it doesn’t make sense.”

“I don’t even know how to feel. Liv and I have been between you guys for years keeping the peace. We had to literally make it our mission to ensure you were never around her.”

“I know. I know we were hard to deal with for a while. I’m sorry.”

A bit of Lewis’s tension melted, and he sighed. “I know. And I am glad you’re working on this, but it’s also a delicate situation.”

“You’re right.” Charlie felt sure of it. Just because he felt like it was over, it didn’t mean it truly was.

“Six years of fighting can’t be erased in a few weeks.”

“I know it can’t. I wish it never even happened.”

“Well… that means you’ll work hard to make sure it doesn’t again,” Lewis said. “And maybe down the line … things will work out.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. I’d understand it if she never saw me that way after the way we fought.”

Lewis shook his head. “I don’t know what she’s feeling, but I know you. And I know it’s hard to hold off, so thank you for being willing to.”

“Yeah, it’s no problem.” Even though it definitely was.

Lewis nodded and took a deep breath.

“I know Liv is worried,” he said. “We should get back.”

Lewis turned to go back to the table. Charlie stared for a few seconds, and then followed.

Violet

Violet glanced in the distance, mindlessly chewing her sushi.

“Are you worried or something?” Liv asked.

“No, but it’s a little … rude to pull someone away during dinner, right?”

“They’re best friends. Besides, Lewis is the one who pulled him away, so no need to be mad at Charlie.”

Violet blinked in confusion. Then she realized Liv was trying to be the peacekeeper and had automatically assumed she was upset at the wrong person.

“No, I’m not mad at Charlie. I’m not even mad. It’s that this dinner was for all of us, and I figured we were all hanging out.”

“I’m sure Lewis is making sure this all isn’t some elaborate prank.”

“Why would it be a prank?” Violet asked.

“Well, we did come back to you being two different people.”
