“Is Violet included in that?”
Charlie winced
“No,” Lewis said, horrified “No, tell me I’m crazy and that you don’t like her!”
“Hey, be quiet! She’s not too far away.”
Lewis was red in the face. “Charlie!” He hissed. “You just became friends with her!”
“Yes.”
“And you’ve fought for six years!”
“I’m aware!”
“You can’t be serious.”
“Of course I’m serious. Do you think I’d do something this self-destructive for fun?”
“Well … I’d mention Lauren, but I think this is worse.”
“How is it worse? We’re not fighting, are we?”
“What if she doesn’t return the feelings, Charlie? What if your signals get crossed and you hate each other again?”
“That’s not going to happen.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m not interested in hurting her any more than I already have.”
“But what if she goes off on you?”
“Well, for one thing, I’d have more of a reason to figure out why she did. Lauren isn’t in my head telling me to continue it.”
“What if you get back together with Lauren?”
“I’m not,” he said, firmly. “And even if I did, I’m giving you permission to go off on me, to remind me why I’m angry at her. There’s no more hiding what happened, no more running to anger when we need to talk. I plan on talking to her, not fighting, and she’s in the same boat.”
“Okay, I agree with all of this. But you’re still new to communicating. Don’t throw a relationship into this too.”
“I’m not going to bring it up. And if she doesn’t feel the same way, I’d be happy to stay her friend as long as she would have me.”
“You would be fine if she found someone else?’
“Of course not. But a part of me would be okay knowing she was happy.”
“Wait a second. This doesn’t sound like a crush. This sounds like love.”
Charlie sighed. “Yeah, I know what it is.”
Lewis shook his head. He looked stressed as he paced around the lobby, staying out of sight of the table.
Charlie felt like a child being chastised.
Lewis eventually stopped and looked at Charlie with a firm gaze.
“Don’t chase after her. I know you feel like you love her, but this situation doesn’t need to be more complicated than it is.”
