“Sheer spite. Or maybe it was finals.”

“I remember that,” Liv said. “It didn’t even affect her.”

“I am a human garbage can,” Violet said. “I can eat anything and not die.”

“I hope it didn’t have meat,” Charlie said weakly.

“It was in Winter. My car didn’t have heat, so it was a refrigerator.”

“That’s not how food safety works.”

“It worked that time,” Violet said. “And if you’re worried about food poisoning, you don’t have to be. The reviews to this place are stellar.”

“I know,” Charlie said, sighing. “I read them.”

“So, you’re good with eating conveyer belt sushi?” Lewis asked.

“As good as I can be.”

“It’s all you can eat for twenty bucks. What can go wrong?” Violet said.

“Apparently they add a charge for uneaten food,” Charlie added, looking back at the menu.

“Just make me the designated human garbage can,” Violet offered. “I will eat anything to avoid an extra charge.”

“I don’t know,” Charlie said. “I feel like garbage is a little insulting. I’d say you’re… recycling.”

“You know in human terms we’re all recyclers. We turn everything we eat into poop.”

Charlie looked up. “How long did you spend in the presence of sixth graders today?”

“Too long. Sorry, the poop jokes rub off.”

Charlie snickered but shook his head.

“I don’t mean to break up the moment,” Liv said. “But what the fuck?”

“We said we were friends,” Violet replied.

“Yeah, but when you said friends, I thought you were meaning friends who fight but try to be lowkey about it. You guys are actually getting along.”

“We’re fine,” Violet said. “We’re over the feud and we talked it out.”

“You talked it out? You?”

“It may have taken some… time.” Violet couldn’t lie to them. “But yes. We’re not going to fight.”

“The jury’s still out,” Lewis muttered.

“We’re fine,” Violet assured. “But if you’re worried, we can easily say if either of us starts a fight, the instigator pays for the whole table’s food.”

“You want to throw money into this situation?” Lewis asked. “Because if either of you loses, you’ll blame the other for making you lose and then fight over it.”

“Come on,” Liv muttered to Lewis. “They’re trying.”

“Lewis, we’re serious,” Charlie said firmly. “This is a normal dinner between four people.”

“The last dinner we invited you both to, you said Violet only brought joy to people when she left the room.”
