“Now that’s a woman I can respect," Violet said.

“How many?” The hostess asked, breaking Violet out of her conversation with Charlie.

“Four, please," she said.

Charlie was looking around, his face pensive.

“What’s wrong?” Violet asked. “You’re not still thinking about food poisoning, are you?”

He was silent for a moment. “Lauren would have hated this.”

“Oh," Violet said, deflating. “Are you missing her?”

“No," Charlie said, so surely even Violet believed it. “If I hadn’t ended it with her, I would have never tried anything new like this. It’s freeing.”

“So, what you’re telling me is that you want to try every hole in the wall place in town?”

“I guess so. The shadier the better.”

“What about a guy who sells burritos out of his shoe?”

Charlie looked at her with wide eyes.

“I’m kidding. It’s out of the back of his truck.”

“That’s not any better.”

They were lead to a table, and Violet texted Liv and Lewis to let them know where they had been seated. She then put her phone away, focusing back on Charlie.

“You know this actually looks good," he said, glancing at the food as it passed. It came on small saucer plates that followed a label describing what they were.

“I like that it has labels for everything, or else I’d be eating whatever and hoping I don’t have a hidden allergy.” Violet sat next to Charlie, instead of across from him. After she sat down, she wondered if he thought she was too close, but he only smiled at her.

Liv walked in with Lewis a few moments later and Violet’s thoughts were chased away at the sight of their friends. Charlie was looking at the menu, trying to figure out how everything worked when they walked over.

“Hey,” Liv said, looking between them. “Wow, I can’t believe we’re doing this.”

“Me either.”

Liv looked around the place. “I’m loving the fact that every table is next to a belt. And they have little doors!”

“This is … Charlie, are you sure you’re willing to eat here?” Lewis asked Charlie.

“No, but I’m willing to risk food poisoning for the symbolism of peace.”

Violet rolled her eyes. “No one’s mentioned getting sick from here. Besides, live a little.” She elbowed him.

Liv and Lewis watched them carefully. This would be where they would argue, but Violet knew that wasn’t where this was going.

“I’m living. I’m living.” Charlie looked at the menu. “Maybe not for much longer, but I am.”

“I once ate a two-day old Taco Bell burrito that was in my car.”

Charlie looked up at her. “What?”

“It was in college, and I was very broke, but I survived.”

“How?”
