Page 102 of To Make Matters Worse

Violet quietly heated up some water in the microwave before dunking a tea bag into the warm liquid. She was proud of herself for being as quiet as possible, but then the door to Charlie’s room opened, and she cursed.

“Violet?” He asked, sounding sleepy. “What are you doing up?”

“I’m sorry," she said. “I wanted some tea. I’ll go back to my room now. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

“You didn’t. I got up to use the bathroom and heard you.”

Violet didn’t know whether or not she believed him.

“Why are you awake?” He asked. “It’s 2 AM.”

“No reason," she said, shaking her head. “I’m fine.”

Charlie frowned at her. “You looked freaked out. Kind of like the night your apartment collapsed.”

Violet looked away.

“You’re thinking about that night, aren’t you?”

“How do you know that?” She asked him.

“Lucky guess.”

“Well,” she said, sighing. “You’re not wrong.”

“Do you need to talk about it?”

“It was a dream, Charlie. You to have to worry about it.”

“You dreamt about it?”

“Yes.”

“Come on, Violet. Talk to me. I’m right here.”

Violet bit her lip. “There’s not much to say.”

“Obviously there is if you’re still up. We can go up to your room if you would be more comfortable.”

Violet shook her head. “Can we go to yours? There’s not an attic above it, right?”

“No, and it’s pretty solid last I checked.”

“Okay," Violet said. “I’m pretty wary of things being above me right now.”

Charlie nodded, and she followed him into his room. Violet of course checked the ceiling for any signs of wear and found none.

Charlie sat on one end of his bed and gestured for Violet to follow him. She did carefully, not wanting to invade his space.

But knowing there was no attic or second floor above her helped.

Roo jumped up onto the bed as well, and Charlie looked at the cat. “So, she sleeps with you every night then?”

“Yes, even after I moved rooms.” Violet watched as Roo found a comfortable spot next to Violet.” She smiled. Having a kitty friend helped make it all easier.

Then her fears came back to her.

“You’re thinking about it again, aren’t you?” Charlie asked.
