“And this time you had a surprise roommate," Violet said. She put a warm, comforting hand on his shoulder. “Give her time, and if it takes too long, then ask her. She obviously been trying to tell you, so I doubt she would lie.”

Charlie took a deep breath. “Yeah, you’re probably right - as always.”

“I usually am. Now, I’m about to be right about something else. You should try what I made," She held up an oatmeal bar. “I know you like your usual, but this might change your mind.”

Charlie raised an eyebrow. “You seem pretty sure of yourself.”

“I already ate one while hiding out in the kitchen. Trust me, It’s good.”

He took a small bite, and then sighed. “Fine, you’re right about this too. This is amazing.”

“Right? Now help me eat this tray of them," she said, looping her arm through his and dragging him to the kitchen. “You need a good distraction.”

He did, but he wasn’t sure how Violet knew so quickly. His mom’s words repeated in his head.

Yeah, this was more than a roommate.

And he was so screwed.

Chapter Fourteen

Violet

Violet was in her old apartment, which was odd - considering it was sold.

It looked like she had left it. The used couch was sitting in the middle of the room, facing her old TV, and dinged up wall. Her tiny kitchen was to the left, with her small appliances.

It was strange, being back. She hadn’t thought of this place very much, trying to put its unfortunate end out of her mind. She didn’t want to think about the terrifying night when things changed.

Violet walked into her kitchen, much like the night when the ceiling had collapsed. She was planning on getting some wine and relaxing after a hard, long day.

But then there was that cracking sound.

Violet would never forget the sounds of that night. The cracking of the roof was unlike anything she had ever heard before, and the sound the building made before it collapsed was etched into her memory.

And now she was hearing it again.

But this time, she paid no mind to it. She went along with her business as if nothing was happening, even as the sounds got louder. In her mind, she knew what was coming. The cracks in her ceiling were getting larger, and it was going to give at any moment.

Yet her body did not move. When the ceiling finally gave way, and the loud, painful groaning shook through the room, she only looked up - as the ceiling gave in and crushed her.

Violet jerked awake, feeling her heart race as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. She was in the pink room in Charlie’s house, not in her old apartment. The ceiling was old, but stable and yet Violet checked it for cracks.

Violet slowly sat up, trying to blink tears out of her eyes.

She had been trying to forget about it.

Obviously, her dreams liked to remind her.

She could still feel everything if she let herself. She could feel the water splashing her, the smell of the broken building, and the site of all her belongings - crushed into nothing. She wanted to pretend it didn’t bother her, but it did.

Violet sighed, knowing sleep wasn’t going to be easy. She turned on the light in her room, checking once more for any cracks in the ceiling. Then she decided she needed a drink to try and calm down.

She silently crept down the stairs, going to the kitchen. Roo followed her, even though the kitty usually liked to stay in her room all night.

A while ago, she had gotten some chamomile tea to try and help her sleep when dreams like this happened. She hadn’t felt comfortable enough to make it because she didn’t want to wake Charlie up.

But this was the first time her dreams made her stay in her apartment as her ceiling caved in, so she was a bit more unnerved as usual.
