We stared at each other for a moment, and then I cozied up to him and rested my head against his shoulder. This right here had been a fantasy when I was a young girl. Now it was finally happening. What would my childhood diary think about this now?

We moved slowly, the two of us remaining quiet as we did. Finally, the song ended, and I pulled back. “Thank you for the dance.”

“No, thank you for the dance, Rainey.”

I went to let go of him, but he laced his fingers with mine and led me off the floor and back to the hallway. We were quiet as we reached the elevator bank. Inside, he asked my floor, and I told him ninth deck.

We stood in the back of the elevator car silently. Our fingers still entwined until the doors opened on my floor. He led me out again and asked which way.

When we reached my door, he stopped and tugged me to keep me from walking past him. He took hold of my other hand and studied me carefully. “Thank you for the dance, Rainey. I hope you sleep well, and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.”

Before I knew what he was doing, he leaned forward and brushed his lips over mine, not once but twice. Then he breathed the word, “Night,” in my direction before he released my hands and walked away.

I watched him until he turned off the hallway, and then I slipped into my stateroom. I set down my small purse and turned on the light above the mirror to find myself smiling.

Zack Wheeler had just kissed me. I had dreamed of that moment a thousand times but had never expected it to happen, and I sure as hell didn’t expect to feel like a giddy schoolgirl who wanted to throw herself on the bed and squeal as she kicked her feet into the air.
