Eve stood at the top of the stairs, frowning. Tears streaked her pretty face. Fuck. I hadn’t even told her about Hallow yet.

Hugging herself, she said, “You’re back. How’d it go?”

My hand landed on her shoulder. Looking her in the eyes, I tried to break it to her gently.

“Hallow needs time to cool off, love.”

“That’s funny. He’s here acting like I’m chopped liver. Flirting with any hussy who will give him the time of day. It’s downright embarrassing. What did you say to him?”

“Only what you asked me to. The truth. I warned you.”

Hearing a noise from my bedroom, I took Eve’s elbow and guided her down the hall to my music room. We’d been in there plenty of times prior while I helped Eve get over her stage fright, so she felt right at home. As if the stress weighed her down, she leaned heavily on my piano, propping herself up with her elbows.

Like I often did without realizing, I paced. I had to get to the bottom of this.

“What’s going on? Hallow said, you’ve been acting funny.” I didn’t want to say that he told me they weren’t having sex. “What’s this secret of yours?”

“Lordalmighty. You told him I was keeping a secret?” Eve’s voice pierced my ears. “No wonder he won’t speak to me.”

“Hold it down. Sky’s sleeping,” I whispered in a panic. “You never said I should leave anything out. You wanted to tell him the truth. Remember?”

“Not about that. Not yet,” Eve squeaked, though quiet as a mouse.

She plopped down on the piano bench, defeated. Picking up her knees she turned into a ball.

Twirling a lock of hair, she told the ceiling, “We were supposed to get married, Hallow and I, promising each other forever. Yeah, I have a secret, okay. Something I can’t bring myself to tell him.”

“And?” I crept closer since I could barely hear.

Fuck, I was old, losing my hearing.

“It’s none of your business,” Eve said quickly.

“Is it Hallow’s?”

“It’s probably something you should discuss with a future life partner, yes.”

“What? You can’t have kids or something?”

Eve’s face distorted and the water works started.

Carelessly, I’d hit the nail on the head. Fuck. The girl bawled her eyes out.

My cold, dark heart reacted, surprising the fuck out of me. Sitting down beside her, I took her hand and stroked it with my thumb.

“Fuck, Eve. I didn’t know. I’m sorry. It’s not the end of the world.”

That only made her cry harder.

She spoke between sobs. “Unless you wanna have a baby.”

“Is that what Hallow wants?”

“He’s talked about til the cows come home. Ever since the first time we met. You forget, we live over at the Eagle’s Nest. There are so many kids running around and Hallow keeps hinting. Everyone in the club keeps asking us when we’ll be getting pregnant. We said we would right away if the creek didn’t rise. I didn’t want to tell him about the high water.”

“Is that what you want?”

The girl laid her head on my shoulder and wept some more, answering my question.
