I needed to get out of here and take my sexual frustrations to Sky.

With her face lit up like she was telling a ghost story, Eve started, “So, like I said. There was something I hadn’t told Hallow. I decided not to tell him, but since then, it’d been eating me up inside. The closer the wedding got, the more I felt it. A big ball of nerves settled in the pit of my stomach, much like the stage fright you and I worked on getting over.

I did everything you said, but I couldn’t get over this. And I didn’t want to bother you on account of your new relationship with Sky, so I waited some more. I had no one else to talk to who I thought would keep my secret. Then I called my brother a day before the wedding, begging him to come rescue me. Like I said, I had a moment of panic. He told me Fran’s, my Gran’s house still hasn’t sold. Suggested, I go there and wait for him. I agreed, but then I woke up on my wedding day and heard you were marrying Sky.

Hell, I got madder than a wet hen. I was not going to let y’all have my wedding day all to yourself. I wanted to unalive you, to be honest. Sorry. But that did the trick. My nerves disappeared. Poof. And besides, deep down, I didn’t want to break Hallow’s heart. I love him more than anything. I’m sure of it.

So, I changed my mind. Like I said, it was just cold feet. Right away, I called and told my brother I changed my mind, but it didn’t amount to a hill of beans. Dumbass said he was still coming. I couldn’t convince him otherwise. I told him he could do what he wanted, but I was getting married.”

“But you ran off?”

“What was I supposed to do when my brother showed up with the Asphalt Gods MC of all people? Let y’all kill him? How was I to know he was running with that gang now? I didn’t know. I promise.”

“Why aren’t you in Arkansas?”

“I made Hob bring me back. Nashville’s my home now. And I have a gig next week, with you, remember? Was supposed to be after my honeymoon.”

“He just brought you back. You have any trouble getting him to bring you back?”

“It took some convincing.”

Eve drummed her fingers on the table.

“Spill it.”

“Once we got across the border, we stopped to talk about it. Hob overheard some of the bikers say they had plans for me. He didn’t tell me what, but I can only guess. They weren’t planning on throwing me a welcoming party.”

Eve took my hand.

In the stark light, none of my previous impulses resurfaced.

“That’s the other thing. My brother brought me back on his own. We escaped the Gods. He doesn’t know if he can return to Arkansas. If he defects, will you protect him? I kind of promised him you would already.”

“Where is he now?”

“Hiding.”

“How did you get all the way out here?”

“Paisley picked me up and dropped me off.”

“Why aren’t you telling all this to Hallow?”

“Kingpin, I need you,” she begged again.

Still nothing going on in my pants or mind. Thank God.

“You’ve always helped me out. You’re the one who made me realize I could get over my stage fright when I was angry enough. You made me angry at you. You taught me to channel my disappointment into wrath. Direct that anger at my fears and overcome them. But the thought of losing Hallow is just too much to bear. I need you to help tell him. He’s going to be madder than a hornet in a coke can.”

“Fuck, Eve. Just let him think someone took you. It’d be much easier than telling a man you ran away from him on your wedding day.”

“You don’t think he’ll understand?”

“You don’t think he’ll understand, or you’d tell him. A man’s ego is fragile. Hallow’s ego, that is. Let him think Noah Fond took you, and I rescued you, tonight. Easy.”

I winked at her.

She took her hand back.
