Maddie went to her daughter to comfort her.

“It started out that way, but I want you now, Sky,” I tried.

“You’ve been using me.”

“You’ve been with my daughter? You bastard.” Maddie started hitting me.

Sky ran off.

I grabbed ahold of Maddie. “Yes, I’ve been fucking Sky. I met her before you showed up here. I didn’t know she was your daughter, I swear. She was looking for her dad and that wasn’t me. Who knows who that is? You’ve never even told her.”

Maddie was livid. “It’s sickening that you’d do this to me. Use my precious daughter to hurt me.”

“Precious? She was hiding the fact she was stripping so you wouldn’t throw her out on the streets again.”

“You don’t know anything about my relationship with Sky. She’s been trouble her whole life. Did you think I’d be jealous of my daughter and want you?”

“I see you came crawling back when Bubba didn’t work out.”

I left Maddie to go after Sky. The girl hadn’t made it past the gate because my brother’s whole crew had pulled in. I jogged to meet up with the old minivan she was trying to drive away from Royal Road. I opened the passenger door and got in. Sky’s face was streaked with tears.

“Listen to me. I don’t know if you heard me telling your mom, but I want you. Not her.”

“I heard enough.” Sky kept driving, but she had to stop at the gate.

Waving at Gunn in the guard shack, I said to him, “Close the gate. You’re not letting her leave. Sky. Hear me out. Yeah, I planned to use you to make your mom jealous, but I didn’t go through with it. Maddie just came here to throw herself at me, and I didn’t take the offer. You don’t want to leave me.”

“Yes, I do. I guess it just comes down to the fact that you told mom you would’ve sworn off all women for her and won’t for me. I’ve been questioning things, and let’s just say that what happened just now, what I heard, answers my question.”

“Sky, love. You know I’ve not really been with another woman this whole time.”

“Not really? Have you?”

I hated to admit it. “I’ve not. I’ve not even thought about it. But I can’t promise you I won’t.”

Sky started crying harder.

“It’s not that I want anyone else, love. It’s just, I know myself. I always move on. I can’t promise. If I had more time, maybe I’d know myself better. Maybe in a year, I can make promises I won’t break.”

“You seem pretty sure about my mom. That you’d leave everyone for her.”

“Sure, when in reality I’m fucking her daughter. You. See, I’m not a good man. Remember I’m the villain, love. I’m no prince. There’s no white horse with me, only my black as sin Harley. My black as sin heart. Having your mom was a dream. A fantasy. I’d always thought I’d leave everyone for her, so that’s why I said it. Look what’s really happened. I’m sitting here in this piece of shit, begging you not to leave while my brother’s crew watches me grovel.” I hit the dashboard. “Now, back up, dry your tears and go inside with me. You’re mine, remember. We’re going to get through this party and then we’ll talk about this shit.”

Sky nodded her head. She backed up and parked her mom’s car and left the key’s inside so Maddie could leave. We didn’t see her again. Inside as soon as everyone filed in, Sky said she wasn’t feeling good. She told me she was going to go to my place and lay down. Stupidly, I believed her. Little did I know, she was planning to leave. I didn’t find out until the end of the night. I’d stayed at Royal Road late to give her space and because I didn’t want to fight with her. We’d not really fought before. Therefore, when I couldn’t find her in my bed and she wouldn’t answer the phone, I called Maddie.

Maddie didn’t know where her daughter was and accused me of so many things. Raping her, killing her, you name it.

I called her friend Leo and the girl said Sky was with her, but she’d be driving Sky to the airport in the morning. Sky was heading back to California. That wasn’t the only news Leonora had. She said Sky was pregnant, that she’d be going to California to change that.

“You won’t be taking her anywhere,” I warned Leonora. “I suspect you know I’m coming over there? You better keep her there in the meantime.” Leonora worked for me, and she’d been seeing Opry lately. She wouldn’t want to make either of us mad.

“Yes, Prez.”

It was one a.m. when I rolled into Leo’s driveway. Sky met me on the porch. “Why didn’t you tell me that you were pregnant?”

“I didn’t get the chance to.”

“I didn’t want you to leave tonight. I wanted to talk about things. You can’t leave for California.”
