But marriage?

Asecret society?

How was I really expected to marry a guy I didn’t know? A guy who had threatened my family and had tricked and manipulated me into something I still didn’t understand.

The knock on my door snapped me out of my thoughts, and I knew it was Stone. A part of me wanted to yank the door open and demand answers, but another part of me was afraid one touch would have us in my bedroom, common sense no longer a possibility.

At the second knock, I stood up from the couch and walked over. I wasn’t a coward, and I didn’t want to start developing that trait now.

When I swung the door open, Stone Lexington stood on the other side, looking better than any one person had the right to. His dark hair, dark eyes, and perfect face and body were an assault on females everywhere.

And Iwas no exception.

I didn’tsay anything as I pulled the door open, so he could come inside. Without a word, he walked past me, and the scent of his cologne almost had me pushing him back out the door.

The boy was overwhelmingall my senses.

I shut thedoor, and manners took over. “Would you like something to drink?” He turned to look at me, and I wanted to scream at the Heavens. I wasn’t equipped to deal with someone like Stone Lexington.

“Nothing, thanks,” he replied, and his voice sounded just as stupidly seductive as it had on Monday and last night.

Ijerked my head towards the couch. “I guess we should sit, then.”

Stoneglanced around the apartment before settling those chocolate orbs back on my face. “Where’s Laney?”

“She’s not here,” I told him. “She never came home last night.”

His head ticked to the side. “She didn’t?”

“I got atext from Alexis last night, telling me they had all gotten together after we’d left.”

“And you hadn’t been invited?” he asked, his face still curious.

I shook my head. “No, I had,” I corrected him. “I just…I needed some space.” Stone gave me a tight nod, then made his way to the couch.

When I sat down on the opposite side, he asked, “How pissed off are you?”

I hadn’texpected that, and I couldn’t stop the snort that escaped. “Absolutely furious. That is, if you must know,” I answered honestly.

“Which partpisses you off more?”

“Youthreatened my family, Stone,” I told him. “Instead of just inviting me to that…disaster, you threatened my family to get me there. I’d have to say that one tops the list.”

One brow shot up. “Above marrying me?”

My chin came up.“Who says I’m going to marry you?”

The corner of his lips lifted in a sexy smirk, almost as if he were proud of my answer. “No one thinks secret societies really exist,” he replied, ignoring my challenge. “It was the only way I could guarantee you’d show.”

“You stillcouldn’t have known I’d show,” I argued. “What if I’d gone to the police, or was too scared to show?”

Stoneleaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped together in front of him. “The police wouldn’t have taken you seriously,” he said, sounding like he knew that for a fact. “And I gambled with the latter.”

“You do realize that nothing about this experience has been positive for me, right?” There was no way he could think I’d want to jump onboard with this madness.

He didn’t comment right away. He just stared at me with those deep brown eyes of his. After a few seconds, he asked, “With all that you didn’t know, what made you sign the contract?”

“Pride,” I answered truthfully, and he chuckled. “I don’t like being made a fool of and that’s exactly what I had felt like, Stone.” I mimicked his posture. “Things about my life were being decided all around me, and I didn’t like the feeling of not being in control.”
