Roberto and I glanced back at each other before I quietly whispered, “He’s been good to me, Papa Dearest. I really do need him, even if it's just temporary.”

He stared at me for a long moment before he whispered, “You’re going to save that witch, aren’t you?”

“You think I shouldn’t?” I tossed back.

“All of that was just a setup. You would be a fool to not see through that,” he muttered more to himself but maintained my gaze. “If you wish to do so, make haste, and inform your mother.”

“Ugh,” I groaned. “You always want me to inform her. Can’t I just inform you and move forward with life?”

“I push you to do it because I know you’re more comfortable with me than her,” he voiced what I wouldn’t have thought would be as obvious to pick up. “I’m not sure if she’s mourned my death or been even in the least bit distraught, but you are dear to her, Willow, and matters like these delve into the realms of the Fae.”

“Meaning you don’t have as much power there,” I concluded.

“You pick up quickly,” he praised and gripped my hand firmly. “Fine. You can borrow Beta Malachite for now. I’m sure I can find a temporary replacement in his steed.”

“I guess I can stick around for a bit.”

We peered over to Alpha Memphis, who seemed pleased with our agreement.

“Go get shit done. I’m sure being a temporary Beta of this pack will ensure everyone acts like civilized wolf shifters until your return.”

“Alpha Memphis,” Roberto greeted with a slight bob of his head.

“Welcome back from the dead, Alpha De Luca. It’s a good thing you didn’t actually perish. The Underground was a chaotic mess with the news. Best you swiftly get that sorted, unless you wish for me to do my new Beta duties and take care of it?”

“Hmph.” Roberto glanced back at me. “We’ll handle it after everyone gets off their fucking knees and returns upstairs for an immediate Pack Meeting.”

The way everyone was up and scrambling for the exits was like there had been a mass execution in here. In mere seconds, only my men remained as everyone was literally gone.

Alpha Memphis whistled.

“Well, damn. They’re frightened as fuck. Excellent,” he cheered. “I’ll ensure they’re all in formation.”

“How would you know?” Malachite questioned, which made Alpha Memphis laugh.

“I know a lot of shit. Now focus on getting that blade out of your chest and dating your new girlfriend.”

“We’re not like that,” I complained and noticed the fury in Roberto’s aura before his expression was a deep scowl. “I kept my promise.”

“Ya right,” he hissed.

“It’s been two days. We didn’t do anything!”

“He better not think of doing shit,” he argued back and let go of my hand. “Get going. You have a witch to save.”

I smiled and turned away, only to pause after two steps.

“What?” he questioned when I remained still.

Turning back around, I took three long strikes to stand in front of him before I hugged him as tightly as I could.

“Die again and I’ll never forgive you,” I seethed into his shoulder. His chuckle only made me let my sobs out as he hugged me back and sighed.

“Then I guess I gotta keep my promise this time around,” he whispered. “My biggest regret was not being a good enough father. I think it's about time I try to fix that by loving you the way I’ve always dreamed of.”

“That sounds tortuous,” I muttered and pulled away to watch the single tear that left his eye before he blinked it away. “But we could find a compromise.’

“We’ll make a contract for the new year,” he suggested, and I couldn’t fight the laughter that escaped my lips.
