Page 76 of Giving Up

I get up from my seat so suddenly my spoon ends up on the floor.

“Nate,” Rose sighs.

I don’t even listen to anything else she has to say, I cut her off instead.

“You know what’s funny, Nate?” I seethe. “She couldn’t get herself to let you fuck her when you guys were together, she had to wait to be entirely broken and for me to reject her to finally think of you as an option. I broke her heart last night, I ended her. It’s the only reason she was with you today.”

He doesn’t say anything, he just calmly takes his phone out and starts tapping on it.

“Oh, look,” he smirks. “She unblocked me. Just like I told her. She follows orders so well, doesn’t she?”

“You can’t do this,” I growl. “You can’t force me to stay away from her just so you can steal her for yourself.”

“Whoa, whoa, slow down. What? Why are you forcing him to stay away from her?” Ozy asks, now settling beside me to catch up with what we keep hidden from her.

Nate’s eyes flick to her before going back to me, his jaw clenches and the slightest movement of his head confirms what I already thought. She can’t know shit.

“Nothin’,” I mumble.

“Are you two seriously hiding shit from me?” She lets out a loud sarcastic bark. “I feel like I’m in a bad telenovela or something. Two brothers going for the same girl.” Her voice goes low, mimicking our darker ones. “You stay away from her, no you stay away from her. We have to protect her.” She pauses and rolls her eyes. “Jamie deserves so much better than either of you.”

Nathan ignores her, we both do, there’s no space for her sarcastic words in our hatred for each other.

“I didn’t force you to do anything,” my brother replies. “Bianco did. And I’m not stealing her, she came willingly, trust me. But don’t worry, when she comes back for more, I’ll make sure to do it behind Bianco’s back.”

This is complete bullshit. The rage boiling inside me is gut-wrenching. I feel like I’m losing sensations in all my extremities, my head is spinning.

I grab the first thing that comes to me and throw it at him with enough violence that he grunts in pain when the glass jar of peanut butter hits him in the face before crashing into multiple broken pieces on the floor. He stumbles out of his stool and I’m on the other side of the island before he can come back to reality.

“Oh here we go,” Ozy quips. “I feel another smart decision coming from both of you.”

Nate is hunched over, keeping his right hand just below his eye where the jar hit, and I don’t let him straighten back up. I punch the side of his face so hard he stumbles back again. I push my shoulder against his stomach, pick him up, and slam him to the floor. This all happened too fast for him, and for once, for onefuckingtime in my life I got the upper hand on him.

“You think it’s so fucking funny to fuck the girl I love?!” My rage explodes on him and I let truths slip past my lips, spit accompanying my broken words. “This whole fucked up situation is because of your pathetic existence!” I shout loud enough that we barely hear skin hitting skin when I land another punch to his face.

His groans are better than molly. It sends my body into a frenzy, a need to hurt him more. To finally give him what he deserves. I kick him in the ribs, and he has to go into a fetal position to avoid permanent damage.

“Jake, stop.” My sister’s voice is so bored one could wonder if she really wants me to stop.

I kick Nate harder, reminding myself of how it felt to have him and Carlo Diaz beat the shit out of me on Jamie’s birthday. We were meant to celebrate together, we were meant to love each other, we were meant to be happy.

“How does it feel to be the one suffering for once you fucking bastard!” My voice breaks and tears spring in my eyes as I go down and hit his exposed ribs with my fists.

Nate’s grunts are turning into desperate whimpers, and I revel in the pain he must be feeling. God, this feels so good.

“Guess you shouldn’t have sent me away for more boxing if you didn’t want to get your ass kicked.”

“Okay, enough. Enough, Jake.”

Rose is too skinny, too weak to truly stop me from killing Nate – and I really do want to kill him right now – but she doesn’t hesitate to grab my waist to pull me away from our brother. She puts all her strength in it, and I leave him alone. Because the last thing I would want is to hurt her by accident. Unlike him, I care about her wellbeing.

When Ozy lets me go, I finally take a good look at him. There is blood all over the kitchen tiles, Nate spits some more and rolls onto his back. His lips are busted, his left cheek already swelling. He struggles to sit up against the wall, holding his side while his head keeps lolling back and forth.

I turn to Ozy and her worried eyes are settled on him. “Nate, are you okay?” she asks in a quiet voice.

“Don’t…” I throw my hands in the air, frustration keeping a tight hold on me. “Don’t fucking ask him if he’s okay, why do you care?!”

I’m aware I’m shouting at her while she hasn’t done anything wrong, but I can’t control it.
