Page 75 of Giving Up

I’m about to cross the door when Jake’s voice calls me out again. “Why are you leaving, Jamie? Rose is right here, you can finish your family tour tonight if you want!”

I don’t turn around, I just lift my hand up and give him the middle finger as I keep on walking.

How long are we going to keep hurting each other? When does the cruelty stop? How do you put back together the unfixable?

I guess some things stay broken forever.

CHAPTER 12

not alone – sad eyes

Jake

Glossy eyes, flushed cheeks, messy hair, and her body in utter relaxation. I would recognize Jamie post-orgasm even with my eyes closed, I would just have to listen to her calm breaths, in contrast to her usual rapid ones because she’s an overthinker.

Rose shoves me in the shoulder the second the words pass my lips. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” she seethes as the front door closes.

“What?” I ask, pretending I don’t get I was being a dick. “The girl likes to be fucked by Whites, I’m just saying.”

“Stop being an asshole for a minute. Think you can try?” she throws back.

“Whatever,” I mumble as I head for the kitchen.

The guys and I were training all afternoon to get Ozy ready for the tournament, even if we’re not sure she’ll be able to go. Nate won’t pay for us to go to college, he doesn’t give a shit about those sorts of things. Duke’s lacrosse scholarship is the only way my sister will be able to get far away from Bianco, and we’re not about to let her miss that chance.

I walk to the other side of the foyer and push the door to the kitchen. Ozy is right behind me.

“Jake, you can’t be mad at her. You’ve been going back to your good old ways since you’ve been back. Fucking around like you belong to nobody. She’s allowed to do the same.”

Her words are a matter of fact as she grabs herself a glass and then the juice from the fridge. Almost like she knows I can’t fight her on this and so she’s not putting too much effort into the conversation.

And I know she’s right, but I can’t believe Jamie did this to me. I just never thought she’d have it in her to betray me like that. No matter how many times I betrayed her myself.

“Men,” Rose huffs as if reading my thoughts. “You just hate tasting your own medicine, don’t you?”

“Pass me the peanut butter,” I grumble as I sit down at the kitchen island.

“Please, Rose, my favorite sister in the entire world,” she smiles as she passes it to me with a spoon.

I’m about to reply that she’s far from my favorite when she pisses me off even more than I already am, but the kitchen door opens and Nate walks in. His shirt is finally buttoned up and his hands are in the pocket of his slacks. He’s redone his ugly-ass bun that makes him look like he’s posing for the cover of GQ.

“Ozy,” he says as he settles at the kitchen island too.

She’s making herself a sandwich on the counter behind me, and Nate is now sitting right opposite me.

“What do you want,” I hear her grumble behind me.

“Why do you bother training when you know I won’t let you go to that tournament?”

I hear cutlery clashing against her plate before her voice rises again. “Fuck you,” she hisses.

We can still see the bruises Bianco left on her neck from the previous weekend and the fucker dares to tell her he won’t let her go.

“Your life must be so simple, Nate,” I drawl. “Living in Bianco’s luxury in exchange for your soul. Abusing your siblings knowing he’ll always have your back. Fucking heartbroken girls.”

“There’s no need to be so bitter, Jake,” he smiles. “Remember I used to make her come before she even knew you existed.”

Motherfucker.
