Page 66 of Giving Up

They couldn’t just let us have a simple conversation about a topic I enjoy. They had to come and ruin it.

“It’s a different level,” I admit. “I wasn’t ready for it last year, but I am now.”

She scoffs. “I see you train every week, Goody, you’re not that good.”

My nostrils flare up as I try to keep in the anger. She’s just trying to work me up, I have to keep calm.

“I do my best,” I smile at her. “Coach is happy.”

“Jamie’s an amazing player. You’re gonna crush St Anne this year!” Cole defends me. I can’t help but grin at him. I think he really likes me.

My happiness is short-lived when I see Jake bursting out of the house, changed into clean, dry clothes and with a killing look on his face.

I’m practically sure everyone can hear me gulp, but I try to keep a straight face as he strides toward our group.

Shit.

He looks furious, the kind of furious that he’s never shown at school, in front of his friends. He stops only a step away from me, and I think everyone can feel his anger because Cole puts a hand on my shoulder, bringing me back toward him slightly. Jake faces me, while Cole stands behind me.

“You went to one North Shore party and you think you’re some bad bitch now or something?” His mouth spits poison like fireworks.

Something stirs in me, satisfaction. Jake White lost control. Jake White is showingemotions. And that’s because of me. Poor, small Jamie Williams who could never defend herself made him beg, pushed him to his limits, and left him standing. He might be feeling rage, but he’s feeling something and that’s a win for me.

“You’re nothing, Jamie. You’re just a little girl trying to play in the big boys’ league.”

“Two minutes ago, you were begging this little girl,” I sneer.

Jake is about to reply, but Camila cuts into our conversation, reminding me that she, Beth, and Ewan are still watching us on my right.

“Oh my God, Goody, you went to a North Shore party? Is that why you dress like a hoe now? What were you doing there, scouting your next trailer?” She and Beth cackle loud enough to push a sadistic smile on Jake’s face.

“She wasn’t scouting anything. She was stalking me. Somebody can’t get over our break-up.”

I scoff, is he for real? Trying to turn this situation around. Acting like a big, bad, bully in front of Camila and his boys.

“Aren’t you the one who can’t stop talking about me to your sister?” I bite back.

Two can play his game, I’m not going to fold in front of Jake anymore. He’s going to have to try harder if he wants to break me.

“If you’re over us, why are you finding any excuse to talk to me,” I insist. “Let me enjoy my night, go enjoy yours.”

I can see people starting to gather around us, they’re loving the drama. Stoneview Prep feeds on gossip, on other’s fallout and demise. It makes them feel important in their world of drugs and champagne parties.

The muscles popping at the jointures of his jaw bring me wicked pleasure. Bow down, Jake. You lost this one.

He steps dangerously close, and I feel Cole closer at my back.

“If you’re over us, why are you still wearing this?” He grabs the necklace he gave me, and my throat tightens.

No, not this.

Suddenly, everything around us darkens. Heaviness drops in my stomach, my legs feel shaky. The adrenaline is not bringing me strength anymore, it’s being replaced by fear. It’s not about him or me breaking the other. This is real, this is the last remnant of our love. The truth I was desperately holding on to.

“Don’t,” I whisper as if there were only the two of us here, rather than a whole party watching us.

The balance tips when Jake understands he’s got me. The evil in him takes over, the sociopathic creature that doesn’t understand the line, the limits, the stop sign that warns him he could destroy someone with his words and actions.

“What’s wrong, Angel? Desperate to hold on? You need a good reminder that you’re nothing to me anymore.”
