Page 58 of Giving Up

“Really? Because I see you cringe every time you see Ciara take a shot over there.” He points at Ciara in the corner of the room.

He’s so right. Ciara’s my wing. She’s the link between me, center, and Rose, attack. Rose isn’t here tonight, thankfully. After the week she had, and the state she’s in, I would put her in bed myself if I saw her here.

“So I’m not stuck up anymore?”

He laughs. “No, you changed. In a good way.”

I finish my soda, tipping the can back, my gaze looking up. When I look back at Cole, there’s something different in his eyes.

“What?” I ask in a smile.

He puts a strand of my hair behind my ear and a cheeky smile brightens his face.

“What are you wearing under my jacket, Queen Bee?”

The lust in his voice makes my cheeks flush. I don’t know this side of Cole. I only know the gentle and lighthearted side. He grabs both lapels of his jacket and brings me closer to him in a harsh movement. My breath instantly leaves my lungs, my eyes focusing on his as my mouth falls slightly open.

“Are you only wearing a bra?”

I nod but still manage to whisper. “It’s a bralette.” Because that’s exactly what matters right now.

He bends down enough to whisper in my ear, “I thought you looked hot in my clothes, but I think you would look a lot hotter without them on.”

He pulls away from my ear, his lips hovering over mine, close enough that I can smell the beer he was drinking, it’s mixing with the smell of his cologne. He finally lets go of the jacket I’m wearing and takes a step back.

“Should we find Luke?”

I try to swallow the ball of desire that got stuck in my throat and nod.

He takes my hand and drags me with him. Maybe I’m going to need a drink after all.

Jake

Luke readjusts the triangle of cups he’s just put on the garden table, and I light up the joint in my mouth.

“Kaylee, why are you not wearing the team colors?” my friend asks as he pours some beer in the cups. He sounds annoyed, but I know he’s only doing this to work her up.

“Oh…I…my cheer uniform is in the wash and…I don’t know, I thought red would do?”

“That’s not very supportive of our team,” he scolds her.

I chuckle at her blushing face. He’s just desperately trying to get Chris to defend her. All he wants is Chris to fuck a girl tonight. We haven’t heard one bit of information about our friend’s sex life since the beginning of the year. For me, since we fucked with Jamie at his birthday party in September.

I know my foster brother; he can’t last that long without having sex. He never mentions his secret girlfriend, we’re so sure she doesn’t exist. So what has he been up to?

The thing with Chris is he has a superhero complex. He wants to defend every creature that can’t defend itself. And more often than not, he also fucks them into feeling reassured. They love a big guy with a good heart. So Luke has been rude to every girl around us, wanting Chris to step in. But he’s in his own world right now, looking at the backyard every now and then, frowning, rubbing his neck. Something is stressing him out.

Luke is also not the most threatening guy around. He’s our little ray of sunshine, he’s not a mean guy.

“Jake isn’t wearing the team colors,” Kaylee retorts.

She’s on the other side of the long table, teaming with Chris for beer pong while I’m teaming with Luke.

“I ain’t part of your team,” I reply disinterested.

If Luke wants her helpless, I can surely help. I just didn’t really want to till now.

“Surely you shouldn’t be at this party then?” she tells me, giving me a playful smirk. But you don’t want to play with me, babe. I promise you.
