Page 56 of Giving Up

My remark makes him laugh and I’m glad he didn’t take it the wrong way. We still have our private joke of calling each other the opposite of what we are. We still have our friendship despite letting him down last week.

When I was with Xi, I realized Cole could never make me feel all the wrong sexual ways Xi made me feel at that party.

But Jake doesn’t need to know that.

Cole puts me down.

“Can I make it up?” I ask. “Are your parents back in town?”

“Yeah, it’s too late. Sorry, you’re gonna have to find something else,” he smiles.

“Ugh, fine,” I fake irritation. “What are you doing tonight? Sushi date?”

“Nah, you’re coming to Luke’s party tonight.”

I turn to Luke, slightly surprised. His smile is bright, welcoming. Is he happy to set me and Cole up? Despite what happened with Jake? Jake is his best friend. If Luke is happy for Cole and me to be a thing, it means Jake is truly over me. He’s not faking it.

Some secret part of me hoped that with everything going on, he was trying to protect me from it all. He was keeping me away from the fiasco that is his life around Bianco. If that was the case, Luke wouldn’t be happy. He’d be sad for his friend. My heart recoils as I look at Luke. He’s fine with it. He thinks Jake won’t care.

Maybe he truly doesn’t care. Maybe he truly just left me behind and is now playing his games with Billie. I’m the new Camila, she’s the new Jamie. It’s hard to swallow.

“Come tonight!” Luke insists. “I didn’t ask because, you know, Em and all that, but it’ll be fun to see you there. It’s some sort of pre-tournament party. Both teams and the cheerleaders are coming. The rule is you have to dress in Stoneview’s team color. Not a word to Coach, though.” He winks at me, and his traits tighten in cheekiness.

“So?” Cole’s hands on my shoulders snap me out of my dejection. “Come on, you’re captain, you should be there. And you owe me.”

“Yeah,” I smile as I let out a forced chuckle. “Course I’ll come.”

“Sick, see you tonight.” Luke waves us goodbye as he joins his friends still waiting by their car.

Jake gives him some sort of dude shoulder hug with a tap on the back. Luke is talking to the twins, but Jake’s killer gaze is on me. Well, me and Cole. I can’t read him. I don’t understand him. I want to know what I’m up against. I want him to hurt. Hurt so bad.

I put my hand in Cole’s and watch Jake’s gaze glance down.

“Don’t you have practice?” Cole asks.

“Crap! Pick me up, okay?” I say as I run back toward the field.

Coach is going to have my head.

CHAPTER 9

Yes Girl – Bea Miller

Jamie

“Mom,” I call as I walk out of my room. “Cole is here!”

I walk into the living room, focused on my miniature handbag to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything.

“What in the name of…Jamie,” she scolds me.

“What?” I ask as I look up.

“What are you wearing? That is so inappropriate!”

I look down and back at her. “It’s a skirt, mom, not a stripper’s outfit.”

To be fair, it’s a very short burgundy skater skirt. I didn’t think she would mind though.
