Page 55 of Giving Up

“Are you not going?” I ask.

“He can wait for me to finish my cigarette.” She takes her time to exhale. “He knows.”

“Knows what?”

“What happens with Bianco. He found out. It’s painful to talk to him. He’s becoming overprotective and I kinda hate him a little.”

“Jake? Overprotective?” I reply, my voice vibrating to the sound of sarcasm.

She chuckles. “You know. More than usual.” A beat passes between us before she speaks again. “I don’t think I can reassure him another time that Bianco didn’t rape me. Like…what does he want me to say? Not yet?”

“Please don’t say this,” I whisper in pain.

“What? The truth? If you think it’s hard to hear, trust me it’s harder to apprehend it. Knowing it’s coming and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Jake comes out of the car, and it takes Rose out of her own thoughts.

“What are you doing?” he questions as he walks the stairs up to us.

Is he talking to me?

No. He’s not even saying hi to me.

“Finishing my cigarette. Where’s Chris?”

“He’s picking up some food in Silver Falls. We’re meant to meet him at his. Come on.”

Rose gets up and I follow. It’s the strangest thing. It’s like I’m a ghost, his gaze isn’t even going my way. Not even a glance. He’s looking right at his twin, and I feel like when you’re a kid and everyone pretends you’re invisible as a bad joke.

“Are you not even gonna say hi to her?” Rose tells him.

“Ozy,” he huffs, running a hand through his messy hair. He finally turns to me. “Hi.”

I flip my hair behind my shoulder and look at him, deep in his ocean eyes.

And I don’t say anything.

“Bye, Rose,” I tell her before turning around and going up the steps.

“Thanks for that, Ozy,” I hear him growl at his sister.

I see Luke coming into the parking lot, his sports bag hanging over his shoulder, lacrosse helmet in hand. He’s coming from the side of the building. The same way I’m heading back to go onto the field. That means the guys are finished. That means I’m half an hour late for my own practice.

Luke halts, clearly waiting for someone and my heart somersaults with joy when I see Cole. I discreetly look back to see Rose and Jake waiting for their best friend.

Cole calls my name and a smile tugs at my lips. This is basically revenge served on a silver platter.

Jake doesn’t like Cole. Because Jake is a possessive man. He couldn’t stand his interest in me when we were together, even if it was just friendship.

I love Rose and I’ll do anything for her to get the happy ending she deserves after what she’s been put through. But I owe nothing to her twin.

Nothing.

So as Cole waves at me, coming my way with Luke at his side, I hurry to him and jump in his arms. He drops his helmet to catch me, and it makes me giggle.

“Such enthusiasm, Queen Bee,” he laughs. “I hope it’s an apology for ditching my party last Friday.”

“Sorry, I don’t go to lame parties.”
