The frustration that rises out of me when he turns her into the opposite of who she truly is makes my blood boil.

“I-I want to know where my brother is,” I say a little louder.

My fingers are digging into my palms, leaving crescents on my skin and giving me courage.

“Your brother?” Rose asks. She clearly has no idea what this is about. She isn’t in on the secret Bianco shared with her brothers.

“Who told you about him?” he asks.

I stay quiet, not willing to give more information than necessary.

“Which one was it? Nate?” his chin points to something above my left shoulder. “Or was it Jake?” This time to my right.

I turn around to find the White brothers standing behind me, expressions shut, chins raised. The perfect masks on.

“I just want to find my family,” I explain quietly, feeling the storm coming. “I don’t care about…” how do I put this? “…what you do. Your business is your business. My brother is mine.”

He slowly drinks his coffee and I feel a hand on the small of my back. “Time to go,” Jake’s voice is low in my ear and it’s vibrating with fear. For himself? Or for me?

“I just want to know,” I insist.

“Jamie, please,” he implores as he pushes me slightly, trying to get me to take a step.

It’s not Jake that gets me to move. It’s Rose’s pleading eyes. She is so breakable next to Bianco. The quicker I leave, the quicker he’ll leave.

My body guides me to the door slowly, but I don’t turn back. Not until Jake opens the door for me and Bianco’s voice calls for me.

“I don’t know where exactly your brother is, Jamie. I just know my men have seen him in Stoneview. He doesn’t work for me, after all, he works for my enemy. I don’t know where he is at all times.”

I gulp as my stomach twists. Aaron is in Stoneview. Or at least he’s been recently.

I nod in response, but he doesn’t stop there.

“What I do know, however, is that you’re a very curious girl. I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying ‘curiosity killed the cat’.” His tone is still light and my brows furrow. Is this a game to him?

“I have,” I snap. I’m ready to leave now. I’m not here to play his stupid games.

“I think someone should warn you,” his voice turns low and ominous, “that sometimes it’s a long and painful death.”

My nostrils flare as my heart picks up and the need for air becomes more prominent. Is that a threat?

Of course it is, you stupid girl.

I don’t have time to reply, Jake drags me out of the house.

“Do you understand now?” he whispers to me. “Why I can’t be with you?” He slams the door in my face.

I’m not halfway down the driveway that I can hear the shouting resonating within the walls of Nate’s mansion. My whole body is begging me to go back and get the twins out of that house.

But I have my own problems to deal with, my own family to save.

CHAPTER 22

If You Want Love – NF

Jamie

How hard can finding someone be? It took me hours last night to process the news. Mom came home and I couldn’t bring myself to say it to her. Because what if it isn’t true? What if Bianco is playing all of us? I’ve spent so long hoping he was alive that I can’t quite believe it’s real.
