“What is it?”

“Angel, your brother…” he gulps so loudly my eyes widen. “He isn’t dead.”

Nothingness.

That is the only way I can describe what I’m feeling right now. There is nothing. I’m all empty.

“Jamie?” he asks, trying to bring me back to reality.

“Liar.”

“What?” He jumps off his chair and comes toward me, but I take a step back. “I’m not lying.”

“You’re lying! You and Nathan convinced me I was wrong. You both told me he was dead, that he was buried with other corpses Volkov leaves behind.”

“I know…I know I said that but-”

“I accepted he was dead. He’s dead.”

The back of my knees hit the bed and I let myself fall until I’m sitting. Jake’s hands grab me at the nape of my neck, his fingers interlock in my hair and his thumbs rub my cheeks as he squats in front of me.

“He’s alive, baby. I’ve known since your birthday, and…and I haven’t said anything.” He quickly tries to justify himself. “But I was trying to look for him, I promise you, I was just trying to find him. I still am.”

“No,” I shake my head as my throat tightens. “That’s not true.”

Then why can’t I stop the tears from building up in my eyes.

“If it was true, you would not have hidden it from me. You wouldn’t do this to me. You wouldn’t, right you wouldn’t?”

But the answer is clear in his eyes.

“Jake!” The sob that explodes out of my throat surprises both of us. “Wh-How could you?” I get up so suddenly he almost falls to the floor.

“Jamie,” he falters as he gets up. “I-I wanted to tell you. Fuck, I was dying to. But Bianco…the things he said he would do. Please, you have to understand. I know you hate me right now, but I was trying to protect you. I still am!”

I shake my head, utter devastation raging in my heart.

“This is not as simple as it seems. Aaron isn’t just alive,” he explains. “He works for Volkov. He’s a Wolf, Jamie.”

There is a long pause before I howl hysterically. The laugh ringing out in the room must belong to someone else because I would never sound like this.

“My brother is a Wolf,” I cry out. “Now Iknowyou’re lying.”

But he’s not. He’s not lying.

God, he’s not lying.

My whole world crumbles around me. This is impossible.

A ruffle coming from the door makes us both jump. Someone is trying to open the locked door. A loud knock resonates before Nathan’s voice snaps at us.

“Open the fucking door, Jake.”

Nathan. At least he’s alive.

“Not the time,” Jake snaps back.

“Bianco is downstairs, it really is fucking time.”
