Page 100 of Giving Up

“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” Jake snaps.

The shock and embarrassment on Camila’s face are heightened by her now scarlet cheeks. She panics and babbles a few words looking between Landon and Jake before finally saying, “Jake don’t be mad.”

What? Why would he be mad?

“I don’t give a shit who you fuck, Cam. But you’re not bringing your fucking garbage to our parties.”

Jake pushes past me and Emily and grabs Landon by the neck of his shirt. “Why the fuck would you show your ugly-ass face here? Did you not take my threat seriously last time you touched Jamie?”

“Jake,” I intervene. I put a hand on his shoulder, but he shrugs me away. “Why are you getting so mad?”

Maybe there is a slight pang of jealousy in me right now. Why does he care so much who Camila sleeps with?

“I’m sorry, man. I’ll leave,” Landon panics.

“I’m sorry, man,” Jake mocks him. “Fuck you’re such a pathetic little shit.”

The shock that travels through my body when Jake rears his arm and punches Landon in the face is freezing. He falls to the floor without a chance of defending himself.

Luke is on Landon the next second. He grabs him from the floor and pushes him up against the wall.

“I don’t even remember inviting you here. Who the fuck would invite the school perv?”

“Luke!” Emile shouts.

“She did!” Landon whimpers looking at Camila. “We’ve been seeing each other on and off for weeks!”

“No, we haven’t!” Camila whines. “He’s lying!”

“Chris, do something,” I yell at him. This reaction is terrifyingly disproportionate.

“Don’t worry about it,” he mumbles back, watching as Luke and Jake beat Landon to the ground again.

He’s meant to be the reasonable one. Instead, he’s leaning against the banister, hands in his pockets. My eyes go to Rose, standing next to him but she avoids my gaze as if she knows she can’t controlall threeof her boys. One she might be able to, but if they all make a decision, there’s not much she can do about it.

“There we are!” Jake grunts as he kicks him in the ribs. “That beating was a long time coming, wasn’t it? Did you enjoy making her your little sub-slutagain?”

I don’t know if it’s because I’m drunk or because I’ve had very mixed feelings about Jake lately, but the rage that boils inside me right this second is all directed at him. Is he really mad because of what we heard? Because Landon enjoys dominating his girls? I stride to him as he takes a step back from Landon, satisfied with the bloody face he left him, and I grab him by the upper arm.

“You need to stop, you hypocrite.”

He smiles down at me in all his smugness. “Something you want to mention maybe?”

I can feel my cheeks warming to a deep blush. He knows exactly what I mean but I’m not about to spell it out. Our night with Lik was closer to my limits than we’d ever been. Or maybe it was past my limits, but I keep adapting them to Jake.

I watch Luke and Chris surround Landon as he struggles down the stairs, I’m guessing leaving the house.

Camila looks at Em, Jake, and me before hurrying away but when she walks past Rose, the other White twin catches her by the elbow.

“If you bring that piece of shit to one of our parties again, it’s going to be your beautiful face on the other end of my fists. You got that?” Rose threatens in her low voice. She lets her go and Camila leaves without a word.

“Drop it, Jamie,” Rose tells me like she’s reading my mind.

She heads down the stairs and my gaze lands on Jake again, I hadn’t realized I’m still gripping his strong arm. He eyes my hand and looks back up at me, a winning look in his eyes. It’s sparkling within the marine blue.

“You should check Luke isn’t finishing Landon outside, Em,” he says.

“If you think I’m going to leave my best friend with her sociopathic ex, you got me all wrong,” she replies.
