Mom sighs. “I don’t hate Maria. And that’s not what we are talking about right now.”

“No. We are talking about it right now!”

“How long has this been going on?” Bryan asks.

“For about three or four years,” says Lucas.

“But Alex is kinda new,” Seth adds, which is totally not helping. “He joined about two years ago. Or is it three now?”

“I think I need to sit down,” says Bryan, practically running away from us and back to the reception.

“Look what you did to Bryan!” Mom says angrily.

I roll my eyes. “I did nothing to Bryan. There is nothing wrong with us being in a relationship.”

“So you think it’s completely acceptable for you and your boyfriends to fuck in a hotel shed, at my wedding?”

I grimace. She has a point. “No.”

“Well,” my mom says while crossing her arms, “at least we agree on that.”

“But you didn’t make it easy for me to be here.”

It’s Mom’s turn to roll her eyes. “That’s on you, Rachel.”

“You had bridesmaids. Why didn’t you ask me? Your own daughter.”

“Because I thought you had your hands full with Maria.”

“You know that’s bullshit, Mom!”

Mom sighs. “I don’t understand why you’re so upset.”

“Because you don’t want us here.”

“Yes, I do. If I didn’t want you here, I wouldn’t have invited you.”

“Really?” I ask. “So you invited us here out of the goodness of your heart, not to save face in front of fifty guests you barely know? Because you’ve been rude to me since we arrived.”

“How have I been rude?”

“Well,” Alex steps in, “there was the whole dress debacle, then graduation.”

“And demanding we get rid of Maria,” Hunter adds, “and I don’t know why you didn’t tell Bryan about us. I thought he would know by now.”

“And you were angry that we were five minutes late last night,” says Seth, “even though I think we were on time. You just never gave us Bryan’s name, which meant we had to talk to the hostess for what felt like forever.”

“Yeah,” Alex nods, “you were pretty rude.”

“And this gives you the right to have sex at my reception?”

“No,” Lucas says while shaking his head, “but if you and Bryan hadn’t made a scene, I’m pretty sure no one would know about it.”

Mom groans and shakes her head, looking like she’s about to strangle Lucas. “I want an apology, Rachel. Right now.”

“No,” I say haughtily. “Not until you apologize to me and Maria about how you’ve been acting. I want an apology for what you said at my baby shower, and what you said after I gave birth.”

“That was ages ago!” Mom shouts. “You’re still angry? How can you be angry?”
