Immediately I hear, “Rachel?”

Rachel forces a smile. “Hey, Dad. What’s up?”

“Your mother just called.”

Rachel mouths, ‘of course,’ to me and rolls her eyes.

“She says you’re pregnant!”

I watch Rachel massage the bridge of her nose. She looks annoyed. Of course her mother would do something like this. I don’t understand why that woman can be so cruel to her only daughter.

“Is it true?” Rachel’s dad asks when she doesn’t say anything.

“Yeah, Dad, it’s true,” Rachel says with a curt nod. “I wanted to tell you in person, but things have been quite hectic.”

“That’s all right, honey. I understand.”

What I don’t understand is how a kind man like Rachel’s father could have been married to a cruel woman for so long.

“You do?” Rachel rasps, her eyes filling with unshed tears.

“Of course I do! It’s wonderful news! I can’t believe I’m going to be a granddad. Do you know the sex yet?”

Rachel smiles, the joy reaching her eyes and making my heart alight with such love for her. “We’re having a little girl.”

“A little girl!” her dad shouts. “Amazing! I’m going to have a granddaughter!”

Rachel chuckles and joyful tears spill from her cheeks. I wipe them away while she rests the phone on the pillow between us. “I have to have a c-section, so she will be coming a little sooner than expected. Otherwise, she’s healthy. Nothing to worry about so far.”

“That’s wonderful, Rachel.”

Part of me wonders what Sarah said to the man. I’m tempted to ask, but I don’t want to ruin the moment. Rachel has had such a stressful day. This is the light at the end of the tunnel she needed. At least one person in her family supports her and is happy about her decision to keep the baby. I didn’t hear everything Sarah said to Rachel, but considering what I did hear, I doubt it was anything good.

“All right, well, I will let you get your rest,” says Rachel’s dad. “Call me if you need anything and let me know the due date. I would love to help out any way I can.”

“Okay, I will,” Rachel says while wiping her tears away.

I watch her hang up. I take the phone, putting it back on the charger and laying it on her nightstand before helping her get relaxed in bed. I grab the blankets, wrapping them around her. Rachel’s eyes open and close. She reaches for me, and I go to her, sidling up close and allowing her to nuzzle my shoulder.

“Thank you for being here,” she whispers sleepily.

“I will always be here for you,” I whisper back before pressing my lips against hers. I kiss her tenderly, never wanting it to end. She’s the light to my darkness, the warmth to my chill. I was stupid before, but now I see the error in my ways, and I will never let her go ever again.
