“Yeah, yeah, I know,” says Mom while waving her hand at Rachel. “You have nothing to worry about.”

I wrinkle my nose at something bitter in the air and turn, stifling a gasp when I see Dad has already lit up his cigar. Rachel opens her mouth, her eyes wide in horror, and I grab her before she can shout at Dad.

“It’ll be fine,” I say while half-dragging her up the stairs. “Now, let’s go check on Alex and Seth and get the hell out of here.”

Rachel groans as I pull her up the steps. “Lucas, I don’t know. I’m not comfortable with your parents watching our baby.” She pauses at the top step, and I glance over my shoulder, watching as her brows pinch together and her frown deepens. “Your mother isn’t even listening to me.”

“One hour,” I say while holding up a finger. “That’s it. Just one hour and then we can come home. We can stay long enough to enjoy a glass of wine and a small dinner.”

Rachel’s shoulders slump in defeat. “One hour?” she asks. “And then we will come straight home?”

I hold up three fingers and salute her. “Scout’s honor.”

“Okay,” she says while stepping onto the landing. “You win. But if your mother does anything to our baby girl, I will throttle her.”

“And you will have every right to,” I say before turning on my heel and striding toward Alex’s room. “I’ll check on these two while you go grab your purse.”

Rachel doesn’t say anything and my hand halts before the door as my eyes are caught by her backside swishing from side to side. It really has been too long. I wish I could convince her to stay for two hours since I did book a hotel room, but if Rachel isn’t comfortable, then I need to listen to her. Although, it will be a waste of two hundred dollars.

Maybe I can go by myself and get a good night’s sleep.

I think if I actually do that everyone will literally kill me.

“Seth, Alex!” I call while knocking on the door. “Are you two ready yet?”

When there’s no answer, I knock again.

“Alex! Seth!” I frown and grab the handle, pushing it open.

Alex wrenches himself away from Seth. They’re nearly naked, their hair wild. Alex’s suit jacket is on the floor while Seth’s pants are at his ankles. Neither of them are wearing shirts, and I think I can see the beginnings of a hickey on Seth’s neck.

I pinch the bridge of my nose while clamping my eyes shut, trying to force the image of Seth and Alex sucking face out of my head. “What in the fuck do the two of you think you’re doing?” I whisper tersely.

“We-we were getting ready,” Alex has the audacity to say.

“No, no.” I shake my head. “That was definitely not getting ready. That was the opposite of getting ready. Try again.”

“How about we’ll get ready now,” Seth offers while pulling up his pants.

“Yep.” I nod and cross my arms. “That will do. Do that now. Right now. And if you’re not ready in the next ten seconds, no swordfish for you.”

I stalk out of the room, leaving the door open, and I swear to God, if they aren’t ready I will leave them. I’m sure the restaurant will be fine if you come in two members short. Although I doubt my parents will enjoy listening to Alex and Seth fucking all night. And if they stay, Rachel might be keen on canceling, too.

Ugh. Why do I feel like this night is going to be a total disaster?

“All right, I’m ready,” Rachel announces while swaggering out of her room with a long black coat on her shoulders and a pretty faux-pearl bag under her arm.

“We are too!” I hear Seth and Alex shout from behind me.

Glancing over my shoulder, I see that both of them are dressed. Seth is wearing a white button-down with his mostly clean jeans and Alex has even found him a tie. Their hair has been tidied. If it wasn’t for their swollen lips and the hickey on Seth’s neck, I never would have known they were getting it on in Alex’s room.

Hunter opens his door, a deep frown marring his features. “Guys, I don’t think I can go. I just…don’t want to leave Maria alone.”

Rachel sticks out her bottom lip and I hear Alex and Seth sigh in unison.

“One hour,” I say through clenched teeth, feeling my sanity leaving me one thread at a time. “That’s all I ask for. One little, tiny, hour.”

Hunter opens his mouth and I grab him by his elbow and wrench him toward me. “Nope. One hour. Time to say goodbye.” I yank Hunter down the stairs after me and force a smile for my parents’ sake. Dad is still smoking that fucking cigar, and I’m half tempted to snatch it from his lips and throw it outside.
