Chapter 5
LUCAS
It’sthefirstof November. Not long now until I get to meet the newest member of the family. I tap my fingers excitedly against the kitchen counter, listening to the ringtone on the other line while gazing out the window. The leaves are cascading down onto the ground and to the top of Hunter’s car. Their red-and-brown leaves add a certain aroma to the air. The sun glistens down on them. It’s a beautiful autumn day and I can’t help but feel giddy.
“Mr. Brent,” I hear my publisher, Joe Peterson, answer cheerfully, “I’m so happy you could get back to us.”
“Yes,” I say a little too loudly. “Sorry, I didn’t know if this was a good time to call.”
“No problem at all. We can keep this little chat short. I only wanted to discuss with you your future book ideas.”
“Future books?” I blink. “Well, I have several in mind. I could write a fantasy romance, or something on mystery. There’s also—”
“Oh, sorry to interrupt you, Mr. Brent,” says Joe. “I mean, what sequels do you have in mind? Your book sold pretty well, and we were wanting to turn it into a series.”
“Really?” I can’t believe my ears. Is this really happening to me? With my first book?
“Yeah. People love it, Mr. Brent! We’ve received a lot of reader write-ins and they want to know more about the love interests and their lives together. It’s become a big indie hit.”
“Well, I-I didn’t really have anything in mind.” I scratch the back of my head, feeling both bewildered and excited. “But…I can come up with an outline and send it to you in the next week or two.”
“Sounds great,” says Joe. “Looking forward to it. Call me if you need anything, okay?”
“Yeah, I will.”
I hang up and stare at my phone. Did that really happen? Am I really going to publish a sequel? Is this really going to become a series? I shout and jump up and down, unable to stop myself. All my dreams are coming true. All it took was believing in myself and not listening to others and their negative opinions.
We should celebrate. I run out of the kitchen and into the living room, stopping in my tracks when I realize Hunter and Seth are still at work. And Seth may not want to celebrate. He’s probably still mad at me about publishing the book in the first place. We still haven’t come to terms with that. Well, we’ve been too busy to figure it out. Between work and preparing for the baby, Seth and I haven’t had a chance to fight or discuss his feelings on what I did. Well, and he’s been a bit busy with Alex, who is currently on his run, making sure he stays fit and beautiful for all his modeling gigs. I can’t believe he booked another photoshoot in Toronto. I really hope he can make it back for Rachel’s due date. That will suck if he can’t.
Since the bros are busy, I decide to trudge up the staircase, making my way to Rachel, who is having her midday nap. I guess I can celebrate with some cuddles. This is soon to be my future. I might as well get used to it now. Besides, Hunter and Rachel can’t go out drinking and partying anyway.
I knock on the door while slowly easing it open. “Rachel?” I say softly.
As I open the door, I see Rachel rubbing her eyes. She sits up in bed, her eyes squinting at me as I pad toward her.
“Sorry, did I wake you?” I ask before placing a kiss on her forehead.
“No.” She yawns. “I was already waking up. What time is it?”
“A little after four.”
Rachel groans and drops back into the bed. “I feel like I’m always exhausted.”
“Well, that’s because you’re busy growing another human inside you,” I say while kicking off my shoes and squeezing onto the bed beside her.
“Have you come to take a nap with me?” Rachel asks while nuzzling her head against my shoulder. Her eyes are already beginning to close.
“No,” I say, poking her nose. I watch her eyes blink open. “I’ve come to tell you that my publisher wants me to write a sequel.”
Rachel’s eyes snap open and she sits up. “What? Really?”
I nod. “Really.”
“That’s amazing!”
“I’m supposed to send them an outline in the next couple weeks.”
“Wait,” Rachel says while shaking her head. “Does Seth know?”
