“It does say that, and I’ve met some of the family and others associated with it.”

“What?” his brother asked. “Like Lucy, the one you’re going to the wedding with? What did she say?”

“She said no one knows where the gold is. I just feel like there’s more to it all than that.”

Gah. Why had he said anything? Regret instantly filled him. He didn’t need to worry about a gold hunt right now. He had just been feeling insecure and annoyed about this wedding. “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”

“What?” Truman asked.

“Nothing. Look, I have to go.”

His brother barked out a laugh. “Sure, bro. Hey, you just go have fun at a wedding and leave the gold finding to me.”

“Truman, just let it be.”

Truman laughed again. “Too late.”

Chapter 14

The day of the wedding was buzzing with a million to-dos for Lucy. She wouldn’t have given them up to anyone else, but they left her frazzled and not just because she had to make sure every part of the wedding was ready to go. She’d hired caterers from outside South Port; a couple that had interviewed for the job and provided delightful samples. She also had the decorations to take care of, and Kat had insisted on helping her with them. Kat thought she might open a flower shop in South Port, and Lucy thought that was a great idea. Kat had run the deli and bakery at one point, before she’d married Marshall. But now, Marshall was running his bike shop and Kat had two more kids. Kat had confessed that she wanted another store, so Lucy was hoping for that.

Lucy inspected the flowers that lined the red carpet out to the beach. Gorgeous. She scrutinized the flowers on each table, in every tent, and all around the pool area of Trey and Ava’s inn.

Ava, Trey’s wife, had called her inside the home before she could finish checking the dinner tables. “I heard that Matt and Tatum will be here in a bit.”

Lucy knew that. Tatum had confirmed through text that they were coming. Just the thought sent adrenaline rushing through her. “That’s great,” she said, acting casual so she wouldn’t show how much she cared.

Ava put an arm around her. “You okay?”

Just then, Kensi walked into the room with little baby Tucker in her arms. “Yeah, you okay, Luce?”

It wasn’t often that Lucy was the topic of conversations on being okay. “I think I am. I actually have a date.”

“We know,” Kat said as she walked into the room, holding little Marshall.

Lucy rolled her eyes. “Of course you all know.” There wasn’t much in town that the Stones didn’t find out about.

Kat put her hand on her hip. “Yeah, Marshall said that he and Hunter and Trent and Trey all talked with Raine at the hardware store the other day.”

Lucy hadn’t known this little detail. “Oh, great. So he’s getting threatened by the Stone men. That’s always good for a date.”

The women smiled coyly.

“Who is getting threatened by a Stone man?” Brooks entered the room with Serenity by his side. Clearly, they’d just helicoptered in from D.C.

All the women moved to hug them.

Ever the FBI agent, Brooks didn’t let the matter go. “Who is getting investigated by a Stone man?”

Lucy rolled her eyes. “Apparently, my date for this evening.”

Brooks cocked an eyebrow. “What’s his name?” She could picture a little man inside of Brooks’s head taking notes.

“His name is Raine Birch, but just leave him alone.” She scoffed and then moved toward Ava and Trey’s room, where Dawn was supposed to be getting ready for her big entrance.

“Oh, I’ll come with you,” Ava called out.

As Lucy pushed down the hallway and heard laughter coming from the room, she felt some relief in escaping the long arm of the Stone brothers. Did she like the fact that the Stones were always there when it counted and someone needed them? Yes. Did she like it when they meddled in her business? No. She didn’t. Sometimes she didn’t want everyone to know her business.
