“Were you?”

“When I was on my run, I looked up and thought, ‘Reese needs to see that moon.’”

She liked how Hunter and Trent often called her Reese or Reese’s Pieces when they wanted to tease her. “It’s nice.”

“Trent would have loved it.”

She couldn’t help but grin. “He would have made you both take your shirts off and howl at the moon.”

Hunter laughed again. It didn’t sound like a happy laugh. “Yeah, he loved to insist we take our shirts off a lot.”

“And you went along with it,” she said, thinking of how persuasive Trent could be, especially when it concerned Hunter.

“I liked playing Trent’s games,” Hunter whispered. “He had the best ones.”

The intensity of their conversation went up a couple notches. “Yeah, he did.” She was grateful they could talk about Trent so easily and with such fondness.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

Then Hunter let out a light chuckle. “Do you know Trent would actually wake me up in the middle of a deep sleep to show me the dang moon? It didn’t matter if we were in Boston or in South Port or in Virginia Beach. He had this romantic thing about moons. He loved to think about all the …”

“The naked people howling?”

He cracked up. “He acted like people all over the world would see this moon and strip down and howl.”

Again, she couldn’t stop laughing. “You guys tried to get me to strip down and howl at the moon with you so many times. Do you remember?”

“Come on, Reese.” Hunter guffawed. “We were just trying to see you naked.”

Cheryse laughed so hard her eyes were watering. “I know. I’m not stupid. I knew what you guys were doing.”

“You didn’t fall for it. Oh my gosh. I forgot how many times we did that to you. And you were the one who got to seeusnaked. Or almost.”

“If I recall, there were several times I had to threaten you guys not to get naked, or else I wouldn’t hang out with you anymore.”

He snickered. “True.”

Again, they fell into silence. But it wasn’t an awkward silence. It was just like how it used to be with Hunter.

Hunter spoke up. “Do you know I use a technique like howling at the moon when I deal with people who ask stupid questions about my eye patch?”

“What?”

“If they ask about the patch, I just put my head back and half howl, half laugh … I envision Trent doing it on those nights where there was a full moon.”

“You don’t!” She laughed.

“It works. People leave you alone, that’s for sure.” He sighed. “Gosh, I miss Trent so much. Sometimes I feel like there’s this dagger that skewers my heart.”

His words made her tear up. “I’m sorry.”

She could hear him sniffing, and she knew he was crying and rubbing his eyes. She was grateful that he was talking to her and expressing his feelings.

“We all loved him,” she said, “but I know you and him … well, you two shared an orbit most of the time.”

“Yes, we did, and I still feel him with me. I miss him so much.”

“I miss him, too.”
