She crossed her arms. “You want to know what Trent and I were talking about in those texts?”

“I think I deserve to know.”

Nothing ticked her off more than when someone tried to bully her. “Why would you deserve to know?”

He put his hands on her shoulders. “What were you going to tell me?”

Her breath caught, and just like so many times since the night she’d made out with him, a spark of chemistry flared to life between them. She stared at his lips, then dared to meet his eyes. “That Roger tried to give me a ring, but I didn’t take it.”

He froze. “What?”

She stalked back to her bedroom and retrieved a big diamond ring, which flashed in the light as she brandished it on her finger. “I told Trent, but I hadn’t told you yet. That’s what that text is about.”

Looking flabbergasted, he stared at the ring for a long minute. “This can’t be right.” Hunter ran a hand through his hair, shaking his head. “So, are you engaged or not?”

She shrugged. “I told you we were discussing marriage.”

“You can’t be engaged to Roger. What the hell were the last two weeks?” He took a step back, looking like he would lose balance, but held up the ring. “You didn’t tell me he’d given you a pretty big piece of glass.”

“Hunter.” She stabilized him with her hands on his shoulders.

His breaths puffed in and out. “You can’t be engaged.”

The truth was that she’d been having doubts, especially with how close she and Hunter had become. “I’m … I don’t know what I am.”

A hollow look crossed his face. “What about us?”

“What about us?” she asked softly, her heart racing.

“Do you want an ‘us,’ Reese?”

“What?”

His eyes met hers, but he only waited.

Her heart raced, and she felt all the hyper attraction she’d felt the night of the funeral. It was like Hunter could turn on this intensity, and it ratcheted up inside her. “What do you want me to say?”

Hunter placed both hands gently on her shoulders. “I want you to tell me if I’m nuts for feeling things about you, Reese. Like, if I’m nuts because I want to kiss you right now. Strike that. I want to kiss you pretty much every time I see you. I want …” He raked in a long breath.

He was kissable close. He smelled like musky sandalwood. It was hard to deny her attraction to him in this moment.

“What, Reese? What do you want to say?”

Pain washed through her and she knew she had to tell him the truth. “I told Roger yes.”

“What?” He pulled his hands off of her shoulders.

“Last time he was here, he pressured me for an answer and I told him yes.” She wished she’d told Hunter sooner. She wished she hadn’t told Roger anything officially. She wished …

Hunter raked a hand through his hair. “That’s … Well, then I guess I’ll tell you my news.”

Her heart felt like it would rip out of her ribcage. “News?”

He nodded, and his face turned serial killer sober. “Got my official release today, and I was asked if I would re-up or not.”

“You did?”

He nodded. “I did.”
