“Oh my gosh, Hunter, this smells delicious.” She didn’t know what kind of beef was in the crock-pot, but she was starving.

Hunter turned to squeeze past her. “You go get yourself situated. I’ll bring the food to the table.”

“You’re an amazing cook.”

He winked. “I might be a guy with only one eye, but I am pretty proud of my crock-pot beef stroganoff.”

She had gotten used to his cracks about only having one eye. Truthfully, she barely remembered that he had only one anymore.

Minutes later, she moaned as she took a bite of her food. “Oh my gosh. This is good.”

Hunter stuffed in a bite and grinned. “I’m glad you like it.”

“The truth is, I’ve been ravenous for dinner the past week. Normally I don’t eat this much, but your cooking is good.”

“I know.”

She couldn’t let him get away with that smug expression. “I mean, since you had to do this for penance, the food’s been okay.”

He chuckled. “I’m grateful you’re letting me do penance.”

“Like I could stop you.”

“Want to know something funny?”

She paused. “Yes.”

“I’ve been thinking about what Pastor Henry said about replacing him.”

“What?” Her eyebrows went up.

He shook his head. “I mean, of course it’s ridiculous. I’m too screwed up to be a pastor, right?”

“Or you’d be the perfect pastor.”

Her phone buzzed then, and both of them paused. She tugged it out of her pocket and looked at it. “Just a text.” She put the phone away.

“You get a lot of texts.”

She shrugged.

“When will Roger be back?”

She froze, then met his gaze and put a spoonful of food into her mouth. She didn’t want to talk about Roger with Hunter. “About ten days now.”

“You told him about the accident, right?”

“Lucy texted him the night it happened.”

“So he’s okay with me taking care of you and everything?”

“Yep. He thinks it’s probably good for you to help.”

“Bastard,” he said under his breath. Then he smiled. “I mean, that’s great.”

She couldn’t help but laugh. Hunter tried not to make her relationship with Roger an issue, and she appreciated that. But she also knew the Stone men. They didn’t like to hear that another man wasn’t willing to do the hard thing, to step up and be accountable for his actions.

He gave her a bland smile. “Humble pie. I guess that’s what I ordered for dinner.”
