Strangely, he felt purpose for the first time in a long while. Even though he spent most of the day doing menial things and making conversation about nothing important, he was happy, satisfied. He hadn’t felt that since the last time he’d seen Trent.

Wow. That was a lot to think about.

The day flew by. At lunch, he ran a sandwich from Stan’s Deli to Cheryse, and she was propped up in bed, reading. She glared at the sandwich he put on the bed.

“How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” she said, not looking at him.

“Why are you glaring at me? I thought we’d fixed things.”

Cheryse sighed. “We did. I’m just … bored. I just talked to Roger, and he can’t come home from his assignment for three weeks.”

Hunter didn’t want to hear about Roger, but he kept his cool. “Oh. Well, good thing you’ve got me then, right?”

Cheryse gave him a pointed look. “Can you really take time off to … take over my life?”

That was an easy question. “Yep. Marshall’s good with it, and I have a pension. I’m fine.”

She looked doubtful. “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Their phones buzzed simultaneously. It was a text from Lucy.

Hunter, please bring Cheryse to the boutique for some girl time.

Cheryse let out a derisive laugh. “No. They can’t all turn on me and then expect me to come have girl time. Text them that I’m hurt.”

“Come on, let’s take you over. I think it would make you feel better.”

She frowned at him. “No way.”

Both of their phones buzzed again. It was Kensi.

Hey, I’m going to get off bed rest and come visit. I want to check on Cheryse.

His sister had been on bed rest for a month, and she was going crazy. Hunter felt terrible that he hadn’t been over to visit her. Last night, he could tell she was tired. Tim kept telling her they needed to get her home, but she wouldn’t budge until they had a plan in place for Cheryse.

“You better go see my sister.”

Cheryse let out a long breath.

“C’mon, Kensi needs girl time.” He was using his sister’s condition to get Cheryse out of the house, but it would be good for her. For both of them.

Their phones buzzed again. This time, it was Kat.

Hunter, get Cheryse down here.

Cheryse laughed.

Their phones buzzed again. It was Dawn.

I’m in town. I need you, Cheryse.

“Fine,” Cheryse said finally. “I’m being summoned. I guess you better get me down there.”
