Fifteen minutes before two, during a water break, Trent turned to her. “I have to go somewhere, but I can come back in about an hour.”

She sipped at her drink. “No problem. Where are you going?”

He hesitated, not wanting to tell her what he was doing, but he didn’t want to act like it was a huge secret. “Come with me and I’ll show you.”

“You can’t tell me?”

He liked teasing her. “Nope. You have to trust me, Lib.” He put his hand out to her.

After a couple seconds, she put her water glass down and took his hand. “Fine, you’ve proven yourself the past couple of hours. Let’s go. Do I need to change?”

“Nope.” Even though it was silly, he felt like this was a big win for him. “Let’s go.”

Fifteen minutes later, they walked into the hospital and he guided her to the cancer wing. He stifled a laugh as she looked around in bafflement.

Ruby, the nurse in charge, grinned at him. “Mr. Stone, this is such a treat to have you here today. I love what you do, but to actually have you come in and meet with the ladies is so special.” She moved around the counter and pulled him into a big hug. She was in her mid-sixties and the kindest person he knew.

“No, you are the boots on the ground, Ruby. You’re the one that makes this all work.”

Ruby pulled back, looking Liberty up and down. “Are you with Trent?”

Liberty had been asking and asking what they were doing in a hospital, but he hadn’t answered her. Now, she gave him a smile before telling Ruby, “I guess I am.”

Ruby took her into her arms. “Girl, you are so lucky. This is the best man I’ve ever met.”

“What is going on?” Liberty mumbled.

Trent couldn’t help but laugh at the shock on Liberty’s face. “You’ll see.”

Ruby glanced from him to Liberty. “You haven’t even told her, have you?”

Trent shrugged and took Liberty’s hand, leading her down the hall and happy to check in on the ladies. “She’ll find out soon.”
