“I’ve always been worried I wouldn’t be the best mom, but God help me, I would try.”

My heart hitched in my chest as time slowed and her breathing slowed once more. I bent over her delicate features, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “You will be an amazing mom.” My lips lingered. “I can’t wait to see it.”

“Why in God’s name did we build a conference room this fucking big for just the three of us?”

“Why are you looking at me? It wasn’t my idea.” Declanheld up his hands, perfectly crisp white shirt buttoned high on his neck.

“We built it so we would have a place for clients when they visit,” Sam Rayne said from the other side of us, his deep voice full of humor.

We probably got into this argument once a month, especially since we were all back in office more often than not.

Declan had returned to more normal hours last week. He’d been staying at his place just outside of town while he and his wife had gotten in the swing of things with their newborn. Most days he looked like some kind of lovesick boy, longing to talk about “his girls” at home. But he was here. I gave him major credit for existing away from them. I’m not sure I would be able to do the same thing.

I smiled to myself, watching my best friends bicker.

“You’re awfully quiet over there, Calvin. Care to fill in the details? I feel like we haven’t seen you since you moved into that new place.” Sam’s eyes were sharp on mine.

I shrugged. “The place is great, but, uh, there is someone.”

That got their attention, just like I knew it would. I held up my hands as they launched questions my way. “Hold up. It’s still early.”

“But?” Declan drew out, his dimple flashing.

I ran my hand over my jaw, noting the stubble there and briefly wondering if Margot like that against her skin. She had definitely liked my teeth. I shifted in my seat, my cock twitching at the memory of her splayed out in front of me in the library.

“She feels like…” I searched for the right word. “She feels like she could be forever.”

“Shit, man, that’s amazing.” Sam raised his water glass to me, and Declan shot me one of his rare grins.

“What’s next, then? Do we get to meet her?”

“I was thinking about taking her to that charity event at the end of the month.”

“That’s weeks away. No fun.” Sam wrinkled his nose at me.

“You can be patient. I’ve waited this long for her. Now you get to wait a little longer.” I leaned back in my chair to prop my feet up in the vacant chair to the side. “Just in case you scare her off and all.”

“Scare her off? Are you kidding?” Sam jabbed his finger my way.

Declan rolled his eyes. “Sam. Sam! Fuck, man, he was kidding.” My friend turned to me, green eyes bright. “I’m happy for you. Whenever you’re ready”—he glared pointedly at Sam—“we are excited to meet her.”

I nodded, my pen spinning across my hands in a gesture of both familiarity and repressed nerves.

My plan would work. I just needed that final piece.

Patience,I promised myself. I could be patient.
