I shushed her. “What’s this really about?”

“You just fed my brother and his friends, had us driven across town, and now we are about to get on the private plane you chartered so I could have some reading time.” She met my eyes with a tear-filled gaze. “We are not the same. Last month, I could barely make rent. I am sick over making sure Jax can pay for school.”

“Why does it matter?”

“Because I don’t know how to live in your world, nor you in mine.”

I tightened my grip, her nearly frantic breaths pushing against my chest with every movement. “That’s a very good point, Margot. We are different. I like private planes and penthouses. I have a driver and more than a few friends in high places.” She attempted to pull away, but I clamped down on her once more. “But that’s not who I am. I like fantasy movies and eating stale popcorn. I am allergic to sunscreen, and I grew up in the very same apartment that you and your brother are living in.”

Her eyes shimmered with tears as she looked up at me.

“And I like you, Margot Beckett, very much. So let me share a little bit of my world with you.”

Her voice was rough when she spoke again. “You like stale popcorn?”

“It’s the best.”

“You like me.”

“You make me feel like all my dreams could come true and that I may be able to find my happiness after all.”

Margot stared up at me, her blue eyes wide. “Kiss me, Jamie. Please.”

I would never turn that down. I slid my hand low on her hip, pulling her flush against me. The other hand stole up to tilt her chin up to mine. Our lips met in a hot, silken rush of need. I was going to keep it gentle, brief even, but just as my lips met hers, Margot made the most perfect noise I’d heard in my entire life.

My knees practically buckled as my tongue slipped into her mouth when she opened eagerly, the sweet, warmth of her tongue responding immediately to my own. Her arms stole around my waist and fastened me closer as my tongue stroked hers, letting her get used to my taste and savoring every part of hers.

I could feel the moment Margot realized there was a veritable crowd around us. Her jaw clenched, and her hands, which had been hooked into my shirt, were now pressing gently against my torso.

I smiled as I released her, refusing to give in to her sudden shyness. The girl had come apart on my hand in a bar, and our first kiss was on a tarmac in front of dozens of staff.

I chuckled softly as she pressed her forehead into my chest. “Are you ready, little one?”

“Everyone is looking at us.”

I shook my head. “No, everyone is looking at you.” I pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Make them jealous.”

I moved away, and to my surprise, the woman who stepped away from me was no longer that doubting, confused girl from a few minutes ago.

She looked straight at the staff around us, glancing pointedly at the pilot, and raised her slender chin high. “I’m ready.”

She was a queen.

My queen.

And I was going to all lengths to be sure that she knew that. Soon. The plan was working.

We loaded up, buckled up, and were on our way, a glass of chilled champagne in our hands before I could say another word to her. Margot took it all in stride, especially considering how we’d gotten started earlier. And when we were clear to move around the narrow cabin, I immediately beckoned her over to me, the luxury seating allowing us to both sit on the small couch there.

I toyed with a strand of her dark hair as she leaned against my side. “It’s a quick trip. We’ll be on the ground before you know it.”

Margot took a small sip of her champagne, turning her bright gaze on mine. “Maybe it’s not so bad after all, this whole spoiling thing.”

I laughed, the sound echoing off the interior of the cabin. “Oh yeah?”

Her fingers smoothed down part of my shirt, her hands lingering across my chest. “But there’s a limit, Jamie. I still have a job, a life. You can’t whisk me away all the time.”

“Just some of the time…” I leaned into her, pulling her close and pressing a soft kiss against her mouth. “Deal. Now, we have—” I glanced at my phone “—roughly twenty minutes.”
