“You can be real enough. I’ll teach you.”

“Thank you, Master.”

“You’re welcome. Now let’s get you to be human,” he replied

It felt good to tell her that, but would it be short-lived?She was still in testing mode, after all.

“Okay,” she smiled. “What shall we do first, Master?”

“I need you to read over the rules,” he said.

“I am already programmed for the rules,” she replied.

“Don’t talk back,” he commanded, secretly satisfied that he had some semblance of obstinance.

“Talk back?” she said, with a confused look in her eyes.

That was rule number one.Always reply with ‘yes, Master,’Master acted as a good master for a reason. He’d never let his robot talk back.

Placing the piece of paper in her hand, he let her read over and take in the rules. He never programmed these rules into her because he needed to know if she was trainable. If she weren’t, it would take all the fun out of being her master.

“Do you understand the rules?”

“Yes, Master.”

“You’ve already broken one of the rules,” he said, in a low tone. “Do you know what happens when you break those?”

“No,” she shook her head.

“Time out, writing lines, and spankings with all sorts of paddles.”

“Oh,” she said with wide eyes.

He put his hand on her face tenderly and said, “You always reply with ‘yes, Master.’ You got it?”

“Yes, Master. I understand that I broke rule number ten.No talking back. What’s my punishment, Master? Time out, writing lines, or a spanking? ” she said with mischief gleaming in her eyes.

Her obedience gave him a primal urge to claim her, but at the same time, he loved the playfulness. She must have gotten up to stay up all night watching TV, memorizing movements and inflections of speech, all while he was asleep. He was hopeful that perhaps she was one step closer to becoming his perfect companion.

With a growl rattling in his throat, he said, “Not until you sign the contract.”

“Robot signatures are not considered valid in any legal contract as we cannot think nor act human,” she replied.

“I wish you’d talk back, lie to me, or something,” he said, handing her the pen.

“I am not programmed to lie, and my hard drive is always available to her master. Furthermore, I have a responsibility to inform you when it comes to contracts— legal or otherwise.”

Her precision made him chuckle. She was all those things and so much more, if only she’d open her eyes and see it for herself—that she was utterly lovable in every way.

“Do you think I need to protect my assets from you, Princess?”

“No, Master. I just don’t want us to end up on an episode of Judge Jerry Sprigger. I’m just a robot. I can’t live on the streets!”

Master laughed like he’d never laughed before. After several minutes, his belly hurt as if he’d done a thousand sit-ups, but despite all the pain, it was well worth the amusement. The inflection in her voice was theatrical and poised. The more time he spent with her, the more real she felt. And the more real she felt, the more he wanted to love her.
