The woman at the counter exchanged a look with the bouncer, and she nodded her head. “Just one moment sir, I’ll be right with you.”

She disappeared out of sight and a minute or so later came back leading a smallish, dark-haired man to the front of the counter. “Hello, I’m Robert. Could you come this way, please?”

Boris and Nikolai glanced at each other yet again, it was almost comical, then followed the gentleman. They were led down a dark hallway, and into a room.

“This is our VIP lounge. Please have a seat and make yourself comfortable.”

The men sat and waited for what was next. Robert pulled out two folders. “Here is the paperwork needed to play in the club tonight, and if you’d like a membership, the paperwork is in there as well.”

Nikolai scrunched his brow together. “Do you know who I am?”

Robert shook his head. “I don’t. Should I?”

“No.” Narrowing his eyes, Nikolai asked, “Does everyone get this sort of treatment?”

Robert laughed. “No, they do not.”

“Then why am I being offered this convenience?”

“The man at the door has been trained in various security techniques but also learned how to read people. One of his many talents is being able to pick someone of status out of the crowd.”

“It’s the suit,” Boris grinned at his friend.

“That and the watch.” Robert pointed out.

Nikolai looked down at his diamond-encrusted Rolex. “I see.”

“Most people are delighted to be pulled aside for the VIP treatment.”

“I appreciate it, but wanted to blend in this evening.”

Robert gave him a once over. “Not in that suit you won’t.”

“Not a word.” Nikolai shot Boris a look. “I trust this establishment will protect my identity.”

“Yes, of course, sir. Everyone is discreet, even the members and their guests. We vet everyone who walks in the door. Such as we’re doing with you.”

“Very well.” Nikolai began to scour through the documents. A few pages in, he looked to Robert. “I’m from overseas, royalty, I’d rather not be known as such. This here is Boris my security. He won’t be playing, just acting as a voyeur.”

“That’s acceptable. I recommend you not use your real name.” Robert tapped the top document. “Except on here.”

“My name is Nikolai; would Nik be too close?”

“Nik will be fine. Boris however, will need something different.”

“Bob,” Boris suggested.

“I guess that could work.” Nikolai could see the corner of Robert’s mouth quirk up fighting a smile. “I’ll give you some time to finish up, and I’ll return momentarily.”

Boris took both folders and filled them out as Nikolai frowned. “I can do my own, you know?”

“Sir, with all due respect, no you can’t.”

“Whatever, just get on with it. I don’t want to waste all night in this room.”

Boris scribbled as Nikolai paced the room—his impatience growing.

“Finished.” Boris held the pen high. Nikolai snatched the papers from him and barreled out the door.
