“Narek,” I said, meeting his gaze and seeing the same steady, reliable man I’d known for his entire life.

“Yeah?” he said.

“Go back to the building. I’ll be in touch later,” I said.

“I…”

“Don’t say anything else. You did the right thing. Thank you. Let’s leave it at that,” I said.

He looked at me for a moment longer and then nodded, though I could tell he wanted to protest.

I looked at him out of the rear view and then made my way to the Roy’s club.

It was early enough in the day that the place wasn’t open, but something like that wouldn’t be a deterrent to my father.

I came up empty there and then got back on the road, not wanting to aimlessly drive around the city but at a loss for what to do.

My father was a difficult man, a hard one, but he wouldn’t try to use Kayla to prove a point.

I shook my head, my own stupidity impossible to ignore.

He certainly would use Kayla to try to prove a point. I probably would have too if the roles were reversed.

Add to the fact that I had done nothing to allay his worries, and I could clearly see how this would play out.

My father, five or six of his favorite tools, and Kayla in unbearable pain.

He might even let her stay alive and call himself doing me a favor because of that.

No.

I wouldn’t let that happen.

I wouldn’t.

My phone buzzed, and I grabbed it, giving a fleeting thought to earlier.

That thumbs-up symbol.

I should have paid it more attention, knew that it wasn’t the kind of thing that Kayla would do.

But I’d ignored it, and look where Kayla had ended up.

There would be time later—hopefully—for recriminations, but for now, I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Kayla’s name, felt my stomach drop when I accepted the video call and my father’s face filled the screen.

“Elias,” he said.

“Father,” I responded.

I kept my voice calm, didn’t betray any of my urgency.

Knew urgency would only play into my father’s hands.

Lamented the fact that I had to play these kinds of games with him, but knew that I would.

Knew I’d do whatever was necessary to protect her.

“A friend of yours and I are having a visit. Although, I guess she’s more than a friend, isn’t she?” he said.
