Elias

“Where are you going?”Davit said.

He’d been waiting at my family’s building when I arrived. I wasn’t sure who had told him what was going on, but I was glad to see his face.

We’d checked the office just to be thorough, even though I’d known my father wouldn’t be there.

Now, it was time to move on to the next steps.

“To his apartment,” I said. “He won’t be there, but I need to check.”

“And after?” Davit asked.

He was calm, which made exactly one of us, and in this moment, I appreciated his steadiness.

I met his eyes. “It doesn’t matter. You’re going to go home, and I’ll call you when I can.”

He started to protest. “Elias, I—”

“You don’t need to be a part of this. I’ll take care of it,” I said, cutting him off.

“Elias, if Father—”

“I said I’ll take care of it, Davit. Go be with your family,” I said, my voice low, and I hoped my urgency was clear.

My brother wanted to argue, but he didn’t.

I appreciated it, because I knew what he would have said.

He would have said I was his family.

And that was true.

But he had Crystal and Amethyst to think about now, and I would never put him in a situation where he had to choose between Father and me.

I hoped I wouldn’t have to choose, either, but as I drove to Father’s apartment and found it empty, I made a quick stop at my own apartment to grab some things I hoped I wouldn’t have to use and then went back for a different car.

During that time, I was thinking, and I realized what my choice would be.

Problems aside, I loved my father and respected him.

But if any harm came to Kayla…

I hoped it didn’t come to that.

Prayed it didn’t come to that.

And praying was something I never did.

But I did as I drove, because I knew that if anything happened to her, I would burn this whole fucking city down and take the Petrosyan family with it.

To be on the safe side, I went back to the tea room and saw Narek milling out front.

“Did they tell you where they were going?” I asked.

“No,” he said.
