Page 82 of Wicked Debt

Todd’s words sparked rage in my chest, mostly because I was afraid he was right. Suspected Kayla would be happy with the kind of life Todd promised.

One I would never be able to give her.

“I don’t know what money you’re talking about. What do you think I’m owed?” I asked, keeping focused on the matter at hand.

“I told you, you can stop pretending. But I know you’ve got Kayla doing God knows what to work off this debt. I’m ready to clear the books. I’ll give you all that you’re owed. Plus interest. Today,” Todd said.

“What makes you think she wants to go?” I asked.

He just laughed, and that sound had him closer to death than he could have guessed.

“I know Kayla, and I know she wouldn’t be within a hundred miles of you if you weren’t threatening her. You are lowlife scum. Mr. Dutton is a good man, and I like to think I am too. But I can deal with the likes of you. And I will, if it comes to that,” he said.

My phone buzzed, but I ignored it, instead glaring at Todd, remembering what I came here for.

“I came to let you know that Kayla is now off limits to you,” I said.

“Well, if that’s the case, I need to hear it from her. Or are you not allowing her to speak to me? Are you afraid that if she did, she would ask for help? Afraid that if you gave her a choice, it wouldn’t be you?”

“I don’t know who the fuck you think—”

My phone buzzed again, and at the same time, my driver came rushing over and stepped between Todd and me. He’d been watching, I was sure, and it wouldn’t take a man as seasoned as him to see that blood was about to be spilled.

“Is there a problem, boss?” he said to me.

“You should let him take you back to whatever hole you crawled out of,” Todd said.

“And you should shut the fuck up,” the driver said, looking at Todd.

My phone buzzed yet again, and I pulled it out of my pocket and answered.

“What?” I said, practically screaming, angry with myself for allowing Todd to get to me, and even more at myself for letting that show.

“Elias? It’s Narek,” he said.

Narek, who was as steady as they came, sounded nervous, and that sound in his voice sapped some of my anger.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Your father has Kayla,” he said hurriedly.

“What the fuck do you mean, Narek?” I hissed into the phone.

“He got the car and took her somewhere. But he left me here. I thought you should—”

I hung up before Narek finished and then glared at Todd.

I’d love to spend the next several hours showing Todd what happened to men who got who the fuck I was, but I had bigger fish to fry.

“Let’s go. Now,” I said to the driver, my voice tight.

He heard something in my tone and walked away from Todd, who sneered at us.

“I’m not giving up. She’ll be mine in the end,” Todd said.

I pretended I didn’t hear him, and I didn’t let his words stop me.

Because if Kayla was alone with my father, Todd was the least of my problems.
