“Yeah. I’ve tried to suggest that she see someone and talk about it. She needs help after all she went through,” Amy said.

“Of course,” I responded.

Amy shrugged. “But she won’t hear of it. And I’m worried about her. It’s too much for her to try to carry on her own,” she said.

“I know, but I think you being in her corner is going to help a lot,” I said.

“And having her has helped me too. I just want her to get back as much as she can of what she lost,” Amy said.

“I know. And maybe she will one day. I hope she does,” I said.

“Me too. Mostly for her sake,” Amy said.

She looked over at Crystal, who was headed directly toward the fireplace.

“No, ma’am,” she said, getting up from the bar stool.

She went over and redirected Crystal and then shook her head.

“I asked Davit to put up the baby gate to block the fireplace.

“You want me to take a look?” I asked as I finished the last swallow of my juice.

“Sure. I guess we can take a crack at it,” she said.

“I’m game,” I responded.

“Okay. Can you watch her for a minute while I grab some things?” she said.

“Of course,” I said, standing up.

I went over and sat in front of the sofa and helped Crystal balance as she practiced her walking.

Amy came back a few minutes later with a huge box and some tools.

“Oh, this will be easy,” I said after I looked at the instructions.

Amy smiled. “Why do you say that?”

“My dad and I used to put stuff together all the time. When we weren’t working on engines, of course. So I know my way around an Allen wrench,” I said.

She smiled, but I saw the fleeting flash of pain in her face.

I understood.

I had never taken my father for granted.

Couldn’t, especially now, not with what I was doing for him.

But I felt such empathy for Amy. Couldn’t imagine how she had suffered because of her own father.

So, I would always appreciate mine, despite the circumstances I found myself in.

“Now, who’s going to be my assistant?” I said, smiling down at Crystal.

“I think Crystal is just the baby for the job!” Amy said.

I laughed and then started to open the box.
