I wasn’t exactlysure what had come over me.
But I had a good guess.
Yes, I was at my wit’s end. The life I’d dreamed of when I’d taken Elias’s deal was gone. I’d told myself it was just delayed, that it would be waiting for me when this was over.
Dinner with Todd had proven that a lie.
That life was as gone as the girl who’d dreamed of living it, and seeing him when I was so raw, so vulnerable had been the last straw.
Oh, how it would have been so much easier if it were simply that—the tension, the fear, the sadness at all I had lost.
But it wasn’t, and I knew that.
Because underneath it all, buried so deep I sometimes convinced myself it wasn’t real, was something far worse.
That attraction that had been there from the start.
From the first day I had met him, as terrifying is that day had been, some primal part of me had been drawn to Elias.
I’d tried hard, so very hard, to fight that desire back, pretend it didn’t exist.
I couldn’t do that now.
As shameful as it was, I wanted that feeling, craved it, loved how that need kept me on edge.
Made me feel alive.
Such a tragedy that the only man who’d ever stirred anything close to that feeling was him.
The man that I told myself I hated.
The man who had ruined my life.
The man I needed more than my next breath.
That thought brought me up short.
I broke the kiss and practically ran from him, putting several steps between us. Then, I glared at him.
He glared back, his face twisted in an expression that meant he wanted to kill me or fuck me, though I couldn’t quite decide which.
Got a clue when he spoke.
“You going to finish what you started, Kayla, or is this another of your games?” he sneered.
I let my gaze drop and stared at the impressive bulge pressing against his pants.
“Shut the fuck up, Elias,” I said.
He just chuckled and started to walk toward me.
Not one to be outdone, I walked toward him.
We met in the middle and then stared at each other.
