“Because I told her to be,” Elias responded like that was the end of the matter.

I risked looking at Armen, and though his expression betrayed nothing, I had no doubt he was displeased.

“And you think that is appropriate, given the challenges that we are now facing and this new player attempting to grow?” Armen asked.

His voice was scarcely above a whisper, but then again, it didn’t need to be.

Armen exuded energy that didn’t require a raised voice to notice.

It struck me that I now knew where Elias had gotten it from.

“Father, I’ve managed this family while you were away, and I know of the challenges it faces. I can handle them,” Elias said.

“So you think,” Armen said, tapping his fingers against his lips.

He dropped his hand to his side then stared at Elias, his gaze intense.

So intense that I wanted to look away, and I would have if I’d been able to move.

The spell was only broken when Armen smiled and then shifted his gaze to Davit.

“My boy, when are you going to give me a grandson?” he asked.

Just like that, the tension was gone.

Or at least it was subsumed under the veneer of the “celebration.”

The men started talking and laughing again, and Davit and Armen seemed fully engaged in their conversation. Even Elias seemed relaxed, or he did at first glance.

But something was still bothering him.

I was surprised I could recognize it so readily, but I could.

He met my eyes, his expression intense.

“Go to my office and wait for me there,” Elias said.

I usually hated it when Elias ordered me around.

But this time, I didn’t linger.

Instead, I took the reprieve Elias had given me and left without a word.
