“Why are you telling me this, Isaac?”

“I hear there’s a new player in town,” he said.

“And you want to know if I know what’s going on?” I asked.

He shrugged, his attempt to look nonchalant failing miserably.

“I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask. I’m not familiar with this new player, and I thought you might be,” he said.

“And that I’d share that information with you?” I asked.

“Why not? I mean, we’re friends, aren’t we?”

I snorted and didn’t bother to respond. Isaac didn’t care about being my friend, but he’d helped Davit, so he knew my family owed him.

He’d take advantage of that, not that I blamed him.

I’d heard about this new player but didn’t know who it was.

Didn’t care at the moment.

I had shit to look after in my own house.

“Well, can I assume you’ll tell me if there’s something I need to know?” Isaac asked.

“Sure, Isaac. You’ll be the first person I call,” I said.

Isaac laughed. “I’m sure I will be. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

He stood up and made a beeline for a blonde who had been staring at him all night. Most nights, I would have done the same, but I was in no mood.

“You keeping to yourself tonight?” Davit said.

“Have you heard from Father?” I asked, ignoring his question.

“Not a word since Crystal’s party,” Davit responded.

“Me either,” I said.

We looked at each other, then shrugged simultaneously.

Words weren’t necessary.

My brother knew me better than anyone on earth, and we both knew my father as well. Which meant we couldn’t predict what he would do.

Since he’d gotten out of prison early on compassionate release, he had played his cards close to the vest.

Dropping in on Crystal’s birthday party had been intentional, his way of letting us know he was back.

And going silent after was just another attempt to keep us on our toes.

To what end?

With my father, I wouldn’t even try to guess.

But the longer I went without hearing from him, the more I worried.

And that was exactly his intention.
