Elias

“Did I interrupt something?” Davit said.

“Do you care?” I asked.

I resisted the urge to adjust my tie and instead ran my fingers through my hair, which was ten times worse.

I walked across the room and sat behind my desk, trying to rid my mind of thoughts of Kayla.

It didn’t work.

I was consumed with thoughts of her, how she pushed me, the way her soap smelled. How the clean, simple scent was as alluring as anything I’d ever experienced.

I forced the scowl off my face and then looked at Davit, waiting for his answer.

“No, but Kayla is a friend of mine,” he said, his tone so much like a warning it set me on edge.

“I don’t give a fuck what she is to you. She owes me, and I’ll see that she pays,” I said.

“She is, isn’t she? From what I can see, she devotes every penny to the debt,” he said.

There was no censure in his tone, but I couldn’t help but think of her threadbare clothing and the fact that I couldn’t remember her spending money on anything except gifts for my niece.

I didn’t like that and hated the fact that I even cared.

“How she spends her money isn’t my problem. As long as she remembers the deal she made and the consequences should she choose to break it,” I said.

Davit looked almost disappointed. “I’ve told you I’ll pay anything she owes,” he said.

“And I told you you won’t,” I said.

“Why are you being such a dick about her, Elias?” he said.

“Are you questioning me, Davit?” I asked.

He huffed. “Fuck off with that crap. Just remember, Amethyst cares about her, so I won’t see her come to harm. And don’t bother to start bitching about being in charge because here comes Crystal. So fucking smile,” he said.

At the sound of my niece’s name, a smile did cross my face, though I was pissed about what Davit had said.

Still, I pushed it aside when about two seconds later, Crystal came toddling in holding her nanny Paulette’s hand.

“Who’s that?” I said, looking at the tiny girl who walked with the confidence of a queen and the balance of a drunk.

“Dada!” Crystal answered.

“Hello, Paulette,” I said to her nanny.

“Good afternoon, Elias,” she responded.

“Where’s your mommy?” I asked, turning my attention back to Crystal and laughing as she continued to walk in.

“Dada!” Crystal repeated.

I laughed, and Davit answered the question. “She’s meeting her mother for lunch, so I thought I would bring Crystal to check on her uncle. Seems like I picked a good time.”

I glared at him and went over to the baby to greet her. “Bari luys, egbor agjik.”

She just smiled, then babbled a response.
