Mom nodded sagely, “I thought the celestite would be a nice touch to your bedroom. It can help you sleep and it matches the decor…”

I laughed and shook my head. Some things had changed, but it still felt wonderful to be home after all these years.

Later, as I had changed into a ratty, almost threadbare T-shirt and a pair of nondescript pajama pants, I heard a commotion downstairs.

It sounded like Elle was arguing with somebody.

I shook my head at that. Some things never really change. You would think that getting married would calm her down a little…

I got out of my room quietly, with the sole purpose of reminding her that it was her wedding tomorrow and that she should be in bed or she’ll end up scaring her groom.

Then again, Gavin is already pretty brave for daring to propose to her, I shook my head. That man must have balls of steel to be able to consider shackling himself to this homicidal maniac who happens to be my sister.

I was probably four steps away from the bottom of my stairs when I heard justwhatElle and Julian were arguing about.

“I can’t believe you were such a stupid idiot and almost let that slip!” she complained angrily. “For all that he acts like that, we both know Ollie is not reallythatdumb of an idiot to not suspect anything.”

Ouch. It hurts to hear her say that! But wait…what does she mean about me not suspecting anything?

My eyes narrowed as I crept closer. They hadn’t seen me yet.

“I’m sorry, okay?” Julian apologized, shrugging his broad shoulders. “It was a momentary slip. Maybe, if you would be quiet about it, then he wouldn’t really find out!”

Elle huffed angrily. “What? So, it’s my fault now? You know he’s not supposed to know about Amanda!”

My eyes widened and I blurted out, “What is with Amanda?”

If something happened to her…what would I do?

I didn’t know why my hands were turning cold at the thought of something could happened to her.

They both turned around at me in surprise. Elle’s eyes widened for a moment and Julian looked away guiltily. I looked at them and repeated my question.

“What is with Amanda?”

Elle shot Julian a quick glare before smiling at me a little too brightly. Somehow, it gave me the creeps, though. My little sister smiling never boded well foranyone.

“Nothing,” they both chorused.

“Why are you still up?” Elle demanded. “I thought you would be in bed already. You’ve had such a long flight.”

I looked suspiciously at her. She was being too nice—something Inevertrusted.

“Who can sleep with all that ruckus you guys have been raising?” I said, raising an eyebrow at them both. “And why the heck are you both arguing about Amanda?”

“It’s nothing!” my sister replied too quickly. “It’s just a stupid surprise. You really should go to bed now, Ollie. I swear, if you end up looking ghastly atmywedding and scaring off the guests, I will make you pay for it!”

I nearly rolled my eyes at that. It was so typical of Elle to make threats when she was backed into a corner.

Probably because it always works.

I looked at the both of them but I knew that I wasn’t getting anything out of either of them so I decided to let it go. Besides, Iwastired after I was deprived of my trans-Atlantic sleep, thanks to my snoring seatmate at the flight.

At least it doesn’t seem like something bad happened to her…Otherwise, they both wouldn’t be looking like that…

But still, I could not help but wonder what they were up to.
