He nodded. “We managed to stabilize her blood pressure and she is resting right now. The rest of her vitals are also good, which means that we don’t have immediate problems at the moment.” He turned to me and smiled. “We’re lucky that your husband brought her here right away. Low blood pressure can result to damage of the brain and organs over a long period of time.”

I held Amanda as she sagged into me in relief, her eyes shining in gratitude. “Thank you so much, doctor. Is there anything we can do right now for her?”

He turned to check his chart. “We might need to ask you a few questions later but for now, we would just like to run a couple of tests to make sure that she didn’t sustain injuries during her fall and to figure out the possible causes for her low blood pressure. We would also like her to stay overnight so that we can monitor her condition before safely discharging her tomorrow.”

Amanda nodded in understanding. “Yes, that would be for the best,” she murmured. “I would be more comfortable having her monitored here than at home.”

The doctor talked to her briefly, discussing Grandma Margaret’s previous health history, her maintenance medications, and her general activity level and lifestyle at home. I stood back close to the wall, a silent but comforting presence for her.

Finally, when the doctor had all the information he needed, he excused himself and turned back to the examination room to check on Grandma Margaret.

“Oh, I’m so relieved that Grandma is okay!” she exclaimed. “Thank you, thank you, thank you so much, Oliver!”

She threw her arms around me and then pressed her soft lips to mine in a kiss that knocked the breath out of my lungs. I was pleasantly surprised by her actions and couldn’t help but kiss her back softly.

When we pulled back, we stared into each other’s eyes, surprised at what we had just done.

Did I…did we just…?

The following morning, I received a call from Amanda that Grandma Margaret had been given the all-clear by her doctor and that she could go home.

“She’s been rearing to go out,” she told me, unable to disguise the happiness on her voice. “I think the doctor and nurses might have discharged her because she was getting on their nerves!”

I laughed with her. “They can’t do that. But you can tell Grandma Margaret that if she doesn’t cooperate, they might be tempted to restrain and sedate her the next time!”

“Maybe but I don’t think that’s going to stop her!” Amanda laughed, her voice like tinkling bells. “This morning, she left her hearing aid out because she didn’t want to hear a word from the doctor unless he was allowing her to go home.”

I shook my head at that. “Sounds just like Grandma Margaret. I’m glad she’s in good spirits now.”

“By the way,” she added. “Would you mind it terribly if you could pick Grandma up from the hospital and bring her home? I’m a bit swamped right now.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll make sure Grandma gets home safely.”

“Thanks, Oliver!”

After the call, I smiled to myself and went over to the hospital with a bunch of flowers I had gotten from Sophie’s flower shop. When she heard that I was headed over to take Grandma Margaret home from the hospital, she gathered a handful of marguerites and tied them with a pretty bow, her hands working with the stalks deftly.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone work that well with flowers, I thought with some amazement.Julian’s sister is pretty talented.

She handed them to me with a mischievous smile, saying, “Now, go and make a good impression on the ladies. You can’t say I didn’t help you out this time!”

“You’re impossible!” I told her, shaking my head.

“Hey, the least you could do is thank me!” she huffed, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Thank you!” I said.

Whoever married Sophie was in for the ride of his life. Like my sister, she was spunky and confident and had absolutely no qualms about saying what was on her mind.

I was still shaking my head when I dropped by Grandma Margaret’s room to find her getting ready to leave.

“Beautiful flowers for a beautiful lady!” I told her, handing her the flowers with a grand flourish. “I’m here to escort you back to your home!”

Grandma Margaret laughed like a girl and took them. “My favorites!”

“I still haven’t thanked you properly for what you did for me, young man,” Grandma Margaret said. “Why don’t you come home with me and stay for a bit of coffee? I’d love to be able to talk to you. You were so amazing yesterday! You must have had a lot of adventures in Europe!”
