After all, our families were pretty close and we did grow up together. Before he left for London, everyone was certain we would end up marrying each other.

Except that we broke things up between us on the day he left because…it was for the best.

“I know that Dan might take some getting used to,” I told her gently. “But he means well. He’s just very…driven.”

“Driven to what, I wonder,” Grandma muttered. She patted my hand. “Well, whatever makes you happy, dearest.”

I beamed at her. “Thanks, Grandma. Now, about your hearing aid…I really think you should keep it with you at all times…”

“Oh, pishposh!” she sniffed. “I’ve lived fordecadeswithout it. Don’t see why I couldn’t go for a few minutes without it.”

“Yes, but it is very dangerous without it on,” I told her seriously. “What if Buddy or I were to warn you about something and you couldn’t hear us?”

She paused and reflected on that for a moment. “I guess you do have a point,” she conceded.

I smiled and hugged her lightly. “Now, Dan and I will be going out on a date tonight. You already have my number so you can call me whenever you need me, okay?”

“Can I call you just to mess up your date?” she asked hopefully.

I rolled my eyes. “Grandma! That’s not what I meant!”

“Okay, okay,” she laughed. “I was just kidding. You kids go out and have fun. I’ll be asleep before you even leave the house.” She turned to Buddy and scratched under his chin affectionately. “In any case, I have this handsome dog with me. We seniors will both be fine here.”

I smiled at them both. It was a good thing that Buddy and Grandma Margaret got along pretty well.

Soon, my thoughts turned towards the dinner with Dan, my mind going over what I was going to wear, how I was going to do with my makeup.

If he’s going to propose tonight, then I have to look my absolute best!I thought to myself excitedly. After all, this was going to be one of the milestones of my adult life. I had to make sure I looked smashing!

Buddy barked excitedly as he brought me a chewed-up rubber ball, one of his favorite toys, his tail thumping on the floor excitedly.

“Not now, Bud,” I told him wearily, scratching behind his ears briefly before I headed to the bathroom for a quick shower. I was still giddily excited about the date with Dan tonight, and I needed to prepare myself before he picked me up at 7:30.

A quick glance at my watch told me that I still had enough time to get ready and put on a little makeup. I had already laid my dress out that morning, as well as the matching underwear, to save myself the hassle of rummaging through everything when I got home from work.

I smiled to myself as I stepped into the shower, allowing the warm water to wash the day’s work off of me. The dress I had chosen was not in my usual style, but it was one I noted Dan occasionally commenting on. I had bought it on a whim once, never expecting to find a reason to wear it because it was a little too revealing for my taste.

Dan is going to be so surprised tonight, I thought to myself happily as I slathered my body with a scented lotion that matched the perfume I was planning to wear—a nice, elegant, floral scent that was perfect for nighttime wear.

After I prepared my skin, I put on some light makeup and styled my hair to fall in loose waves over my shoulders. I used a gold clip with rhinestones to pin my hair back on one side, allowing the waves from the other side to loosely frame my face.

Buddy appeared at my side with his favorite ball. Again.

“Oh Bud, not now,” I told him with a grin. “I have to get ready for our date.”

He gave a low whine and walked out of the room, probably to sulk. I shook my head and proceeded to spray on some perfume.

I had been too busy indulging myself in my preparations that I failed to notice that I was running out of time. I quickly swiped on some lipstick—the final touch—and waited for Dan to arrive.

I initially planned on coming down a little late so I can surprise him with my look this evening. I must admit I felt a little shy because the shift-styled, cream-colored dress I had chosen, draped and hugged my body in all the right places. The silky fabric highlighting curves that I mostly kept hidden under modest dresses. The cowl neckline help up by thin spaghetti straps dipped low, grazing tantalizingly over my décolletage.

I had never worn such a dress before, and I thought it might be a good way to surprise him and spice up things in our relationship.

I reached out for the strappy, golden heels that I had set aside, and frowned when I came up with only one shoe.

Funny. Shoes come in pairs.
